A Chinese Character

This new portrait study gives you a hint as to where I want to travel to someday 😉

I´ve always been fascinated by Asia, especially China and Japan and remember with startling clarity giving impressions of a japanese dancer before family members when I was very young. In order to do so, I borrowed my mom´s kimono-styled dressing gown and painted my lips generously with her lipstick and sang nonsense syllables in a very high voice and embarrasingly out of tune 😉

Do you remember doing something similar when you were a child??

    1. Many thanks, Inese!! 🙂 Actually I take my inspirations from a couple of books I have that show lovely photographs of different people, landscapes and cultures. Wish I could convince someone to be patient enough to sit for me though 😉
I still like to dress up from time to time – though not as extraordinary as I used to 😉

    1. Thank you so much, Lion!! 🙂 Your comments are something I always look very much forward to 😀
I discovered that drawing old people is so much more satisfying than doing portraits of young ones. Their faces tell stories with every line and wrinkle…
Wish you a wonderful sunday! 🙂

    1. Thank you so much, Cathy!!! 🙂
Wow – that sounds very intriguing! 😉 Did you made your own costume as well? Ahh – I just love children playing pretend-to-be, it´s so full of imagination, which so easily can get lost when we grow up… But I guess us artists always keep this inner child a part of us 😉 At least, I do! Have a beautiful weekend! xxxxx ❤

      1. I wrapped a brown towel around my hips and pretended it was a grass hula skirt. 😊 I was an imaginative child, always talking to invisible friends…now, the friends talk to me.
You have a great weekend too, Sarah!! ❤️

      2. Haha! 🙂 I´m very well aquainted with those invisible friends! 😉 I also used to have lots of imaginery pets! Horses, dogs, cats…a complete zoo at times 😉 It´s a very good thing that they still come around and help you out when needed 😉 Wish mine would do the same, but they went their own ways a long time ago…

  1. As a child, I played “The King and I” recording of the musical on my record player, dressed up, danced, sang, and pretended to ‘be there’. It was wonderful and shaped my life. Thank you! -Jennie –

      1. Flying paper airplanes , eventually I came to the conclusion that it would be so much fun if the airplane spouted fire like a rocket !!!😂😂 . Fortunately my father was able
        To put the fire out

  2. Nicely done Sarah. I’d really like to go to China or Japan someday also. No dressing up as a Japanese dancer for me. The big thing when I was growing up was making a towel or blanket into a cape to be Batman or Superman. Cheers!

    1. Thank you very much, Chris!! 🙂 I remember discussing with you the benefits of learning chinese – it would be good if I managed to do it before I go there, but I very much doubt it 😉 Funny coincidence though: I bought today a self-study course for japanese (it was a real bargain), so in about 30 days I should be ready to go to Japan if one can believe it 😉
Ahh, yes – the magic towel or blanket! I did that too, though I always prefered Batman 😉 Oh, and Spiderman, but he´s so awesome that he doesn´t need a cape 😉 Cheers!
