A couple of months ago, I sent my dear friend and author Mary Cathleen Clark an email attached with one of my drawings and asked her, if she would like to write something that would go well with it. And she came up with this one hell of an awesome poem! I didn’t post our combined efforts back then, because she went on a sabbatical but now she´s back! So hop over to her blog and enjoy her stunning stories and poems!

Poker Face

his adored face…free of artifice

or perhaps cunningly cloaked instead

constructs expressions conveying loyalty, honesty

and I’m so easily led

and his smile…open and bright

could so easily pull me under

waves of helplessness, hopelessness

and rip my heart asunder

if I dare gaze deep into his inscrutable eyes

just what will I see…

will I see love, need, desire, wanting,

or only death’s darkness looking back at me

I wonder…

if I strip the skin from his poker face,

tear off his upturned lips,

pluck out his beguiling eyes,

until all that’s left is bone and blood’s drip

what will I find….

    1. Thanks so much, Su! 🙂 When I did the drawing I simply wasn’t sure if it should go alone, it felt to me that there´s a story behind it somehow. And unable to come up with something suitable I turned to Cathy knowing that if anybody could come up with something awesome it would be her, since she´s the Queen of Creepy! 😉 You should read some of her stories, if you find the time, they really make you toes curl!

      1. I really like the way you collaborate with other creative people Sarah. Your work can stand alone proudly, but it’s also enriched by their input — and their work by the inspiration you provide.
        I checked out Cathy’s blog when you posted Poker Face — you’re right — seriously scary.

      2. Thank you so much, Su, that´s such a wonderful thing to say! 🙂 I often think of artists as flowers and our ideas and imagination the bees and other insects that fly around and help pollinating each other in a creative way 😉

      1. I included a skull on Dr. Dan’s chiropractor painting I did around Easter. 🙂 Skulls are cool to many kids, Halloween holiday, and Dia de la Muertos (day of the dead).

  8. I love your drawing, Sarah. 💜 It has inspired me beyond writing the poem…just looking into those empty eye sockets can cause my imagination to take wing. The dead have many tales to tell. 😁

  12. Never judge a book by it’s cover, I guess? 🙂 A suitably creepy poem to go along with your beautiful drawing. I really enjoy and admire anatomical sketches, particularly those of skulls and skeletal systems of humans as well as other animals. Did you give this one a name? 😉

      It´s always a mistake to judge a book by its cover 😉 Looks can be so very deceiving…
      It´s wonderful that you enjoy these kind of sketches, they are the very tools with which every artist should start their training, be it a self-imposed one like I do it or a formal one. I enjoy doing them very much and should really get back to drawing these…
      No name though, I´m afraid, but I was tempted to call it Yorick 😉 Now that you´ve made me think about it, I really think that´s what I might call this drawing 🙂
