Today is Cartoonist´s Day!!!

Two of my very favorite cartoonists are Albert Uderzo and Hergé, the first is the comic book artist and co-author of Asterix, the second is the creator of “The Adventures of Tintin“.

I did both these drawings a few days ago two honor these fabulous artists and hope they would find their approval.

Although I read far more books than comics nowadays, I always come back to them, especially when I learn a new language, like French at the moment. I find that comic books are absolutely ideal for the first early stages in becoming acquainted with a foreign language and I can highly recommend it. What could irritate you at first though could be the different names: in German for example, Tintin is called Tim, and Snowy is Struppi whose name is the most beautiful in French I think: Milou.  Asterix and Obelix are the same but Dogmatix is Idefix like it is in French.

  1. I never thought to read comic books when learning a new language! Look at you with the unique tip 🙂 As for TinTin ohhh your tribute is adorable ~ He’s a great character!

    1. Thanks so much! 🙂
      After having tackled the comic stage of learning a new language, I can recommend start reading children’s books or young adult books that you already know. That way you don´t have to pay too much attention on every single word you don´t understand but can just follow the flow of the story. If you mark those words with a pencil as you read, you can go back to them after you´ve finished the book and write them down. That way you learn a whole lote of new words!

  3. Lovely drawings Sarah. I adore Tin Tin!! I think my favourite cartoon of all time is Bill Waterson’s “Calvin and Hobbes”. I liked it before the boy-child was born, but afterwards, I kept seeing my little guy in Calvin’s antics. 🙂

  7. This is great Sarah! Love your creation:) I also love the tip you’ve shared…to read comics when one is learning a new language. Very helpful!
    Asterix & Obelix is my favourite comic and it takes me back to such a simpler time, my childhood. I still read it sometimes and it gives me the same happiness. So much respect for Goscinny & Uderzo

      I´m glad you might be picking up on that tip, it has been very helpful to me 🙂 And after the comic book reading I can always recommend starting with young adult books you already know, like Harry Potter for instance 😉 That way you won´t be frightened if there are words you don´t understand as you already know what happens and can go on reading without looking everything up.
      It´s lovely that reading and admiring the adventures of Asterix & Obelix are another thing we have in common! 🙂 xoxo ❤

  9. I’m obviously flying in the wrong circles. Have not heard of them but like your drawings. I don’t know that I’ve read comics in the last couple of decades but enjoy the acerbic sayings of Maxine. She is oddly drawn by a man!

      I haven’t known of Maxine until now and just googled her – what a cracker! She´s hilarious! Thanks for pointing her out to me!

  10. Excellent drawings. Asterix and Tintin are two of my favourites as well. Tintin I read as a little boy, Asterix not until my early teen years. I even used to have a shirt that said “GAUL” on it . 🙂 You have excellent taste in reading material. 🙂

  11. I share your love of both. When my daughter visited Belgium on a school trip some nearly 10 years ago, she bought me a wonderful calendar of TinTin. We cut out each image and have them framed around the house. Astérix and Obélix also rule as far as I am concerned. There is a wonderful shop in Grenoble where I am often found nose pressed agains the glass. It is devoted to BD (Bande Desinee) or cartoons and chief amongst them are TinTin and Astérix. I crave the little figures in the window. And I agree, incidentally that Milou is by far the nicest name for Snowy xxxx

    1. Ooh! I love what you did with that calendar of TinTin! I think I would have done the same 🙂
      I very much hope you do not only press your nose against the window from this shop but enter it from time to time too 😉 But it is a lovely image in my head that you have created with your words and reminds me very much of what I did when I was a kid – pressing my nose against shop windows was a favorite past-time of mine 😉 Too sad that with all the shopping malls this is something that will get lost rather sooner than later…
      By the way, I love the French term “Bande desinee” it´s sounds a lot more sophisticated and respectful somehow 🙂 But when I came across the abbreviation “BD” for the first time in my French class, I was a little bit puzzled because it sounded much like “Bidet”!!! 😀
      And now that you´ve said it, I think it´s time to try if I can make some Asterixes and Obelixes out of clay! Have a beautiful weekend! xxxxxxx

      1. Oooh …. I hope you will share them when they are done! By the way just pronounce it the French way Bay Day and it is less porcelain private 😉 And yes, I do go into the shop from time to time …. they have a little bar at the back which is just the place to take a sneaky glass or a good girls cup of coffee and sit with The Bean and flick through a book or two. The French are very respectful of the BD so the sophisticated monicker is very appropriate xxxx

      2. Oh, I certainly will do that – given I manage to form them in the first place 😉 I think I will have to start quite big to get all the details right and then slowly work down the scale.
        That shop sounds lovely! Reading a good BD 😉 and drinking coffee – just as good as eating cake and watching the X-files 😉 Have a wonderful Sunday! xxxxxxxxx
