It´s time again for the wonderful challenge The Changing Seasons, invented by Max at Cardinal Guzman and now hosted by my dear friend Su at Zimmerbitch.
Although Spring officially started this month, March decided not to take any notice of it and it was bitterly cold here throughout.
On one of my walks I decided to take advantage of the still barren trees and took a few photos from their spindly branches reaching into the clear skies.
With some editing magic (Snapseed) these following two images of the same photo came to life:
I couldn´t decide which one I like more, so I posted them both. 😉 Do you have a preference?
You might have noticed that I posted quite a lot of water color paintings this month, mostly birds – this is mainly due to me having acquired a beautiful new set of professional water colors that I had been eyeing for years now but never bought because to be honest, they are quite pricey (about 89 Eur).
The funny thing is, in German the word “Schmincke” (which is the name of this brand of artist supplies) is very similar to the word “Schminke” which means “make-up” in German.
I normally wear no make-up at all, only some lipstick, so telling people that I had bought some new “Schminke” caused at first many raised eye brows and irritation (also some heavy scrutinizing of my clearly make-up free face) – until I explained what kind of “Schmincke” I meant. 😉
You can tell that they are quite something because each of the little pans is separately wrapped and sealed!
I spent a good quarter of an hour to unwrap them all and put the pans back into their places.
And because I wanted Spring to come on time (it didn’t work), I thought I might help it getting ready by painting and thus reminding it of some of my favourite flowers:
As to all the other paintings I made this month, they are soon going to be posted separately. 😉
If you would like to join me and the others in this challenge, here are the guidelines:
The Changing Seasons Version One (photographic):
- Each month, post 5-20 photos in a gallery that you feel represent your month
- Don’t use photos from your archive. Only new shots.
- Tag your posts with #MonthlyPhotoChallenge and #TheChangingSeasons so that others can find them
The Changing Seasons Version Two (you choose the format):
- Each month, post a photo, recipe, painting, drawing, video, whatever that you feel says something about your month
- Don’t use archive stuff. Only new material!
- Tag your posts with #MonthlyPhotoChallenge and #TheChangingSeasons so others can find them.
I can totally imagine your excitement with the new colours! They look good! Last year, I indulged in some watercolor paints as well, they’re precious to me:-) Winter is happy to stay here as well it seems which is another reason why I’m happy to gaze at your gorgeous floral paintings! They so pretty Sarah, each one of them!

I’m still in love with my new paints – lol! What kind of paints do you use? I’m always on the lookout for such things and appreciate other artist’s opinions in that matter. Many seem to prefer the liquid paints that come in tubes. Hugs!! 😊💞

What beautiful photos, Sarah. I love the texture and simplicity of the branches. And your flowers are gorgeous. You could easily illustrate a compendium of flowers. 🙂

Skipping the challenge, but Sarah…love your Aquarells ! I think the ‘poppy’ is my favorite.
About the weather…consider moving south-west, hihi. Upcoming weekend, 22-24 degrees over here!

Beautiful photos AND paintings Sarah. Of the tree photos, I like the top one most, probably because it gives hope of life with the tinge of green. I have NO talent in art or painting, but I do enjoy taking (very nonprofessional) photos. What I’m loving now is seeing the RED in the branches as the sap starts moving, the blood of plant life. xo

Thank you so much, Pam! Isn’t it amazing to watch life moving back into plant life? I planted some bulbs last fall and admire now their steady growth. 😊 xo 💚

Ohhhhh so much to talk about, Sarah! I like the “take 1” photo because it seems to have levels to it to me, like a deeper mood or something similar 😉 I also LOVE the Swan River daisies watercolor. You provide a lot of detail to it yet it still has a wonderful simplicity to it. I am so excited for flowers to be blooming (I just want the weather to get a bit warmer so it can happen!)

I like both photos, but if I had to choose, I think it would be the first one. The second one looks “colder” to me, which makes me think more of winter. The first one is also cold, but the richness of the green suggests that at some point, warmth will creep in (we hope!!) and that make me think more of March. Finally, thanks for posting the flowers you painted! They make me think of spring with their warm, bright colors. Keep painting!

You’ve had such a beautiful month, even if Spring has decided to delay her arrival.
I love both photographs of the bare branches (I actually am posting one of naked branches for my Changing Seasons too! Great minds think alike!!!!). The first really reminds me of the world of The Iron Fey (Julie Kagawa) – so cold, so mysterious. The 2nd brings memories of walking on a crisp, cold winter’s day – and I know you can’t wait for the warmer weather to descend, but being here in Singapore, the memory of a walk on a cold day is precious.
What fun to have the Paint Set of your Dreams! It must have been so magical to prepare the set, unwrapping each one, smelling the newness of it all! And we benefit with lovely new paintings to enjoy!

Thank you so much! I love the books by Julie Kagawa!! When I read them I couldn’t stop imagining how it all looked like, she writes so visually! And to hear you say that my picture reminds you of her Iron Fey kingdom is so wonderful! 😃
And don’t worry – when it’s over 36 degrees around here I sometimes long for those cold and crisp days myself – lol! 😂
I look forward to see how your month has been!!
Have a lovely and beautiful weekend and Happy Easter! 😄💕🐇🌷

Both of your photos are beautiful, Sarah, but I’m partial to the first one, the blues and greens seem soothing to me. And your flowers are gorgeous. We have orange poppies here, so the red poppy “popped” out for me, but they’re all so beautiful and vibrant. It’s definitely warming up here now, which is a nice change. Have a good rest of your week. 🙂 💝🏵🌷

I know what you mean, Sarah. I used to love pinks and purples, but now I’m drawn to oranges, yellows, and reds – the more vibrant colors. 🙂 Wishing you the same, and it’s almost Friday, too! ❤💙💚🧡

I love your flower paintings! And for some reason I prefer the first bare tree, perhaps because there is a bit of yellow in the sky. Are these watercolors in cakes that you use with a wet brush? I am using the tube kind with my students at the moment. We have watercolor cakes at school, but the color looks chalky when it dries. Of course those aren’t professional, they’re for children. Thank you for sharing your lovely art, Sarah.

Thank you very much, Jennie! Yes, these are in cakes that you use with a wet brush. As a kid I also didn’t like the chalky quality of my paints but there’s a huge difference between those paints and the ones I used later. When the pigments are grinded finer you don’t get that chalky look anymore, but of course they are more expensive, though not as expensive as the ones I have now!And I also think using the colours that come in tubes makes more sense when working with kids. Never used them myself though but know that many artists prefer them.

With your talent those Schmincke paints will be singing for joy that they have come to such a perfect home. I love the barren branches photos …. I can’t make up my mind either – both treatments are equally enticing. And your paintings …. just exquisite. You go from strength to strength …. bravo!! Xxxxxx

I think I prefer take 1 but both are gorgeous Sarah – as are your paintings.
The Schmincke paints look wonderful. I can never resist new art supplies but then I don’t have the time to use them. I never learn from this!
I’d like to join your challenge to but this has been a stressful month so I will maybe start next time!

Thank you so much, Darren! I think take 1 is definitely the winner here!
The paints are wonderful to paint with – extremely smooth! My old set of water colors seems rough in comparison.
Buying art supplies is so much fun, isn’t it? 😉 I always try to buy only the things I need most, otherwise I would be broke! LOL!
I look forward to see you participating in the challenge – it´s really lovely to reflect on the past month in this way as it makes you aware of the things you´ve accomplished without maybe not having it realized or appreciated before.

It is a difficult decision to make between the first and the second picture. Hmm, nearly tossing a coin for this but I think I would go with #1. The reason is subtle. The first picture you can see some of the branches and leafs in the back ground. I like to see details in pictures. That gives an edge to go to #1.
You paint so lovely flowers! Good to see them for the time of season changing now.

When I saw the first image of the barren trees, I thought “wow” and then I saw your water colours and needed a new superlative! They are stunning Sarah. I especially love the tiger lily; I can almost feel warmth radiating off it. I’m so glad you have new paints; using good materials makes a tangible difference, but also are an important sign that you believe in your art — as you should. I am so happy you are sharing your changing seasons with us. xxxxxx

Aww – thank you so much, Su! I have to admit, it felt almost as if the colors for the tiger lily were flowing out of me, I painted it really quickly without much thinking of where to put the highlights etc. I´m so glad you feel the warmth radiating of it!
And you´re so right about purchasing good materials being a sign that I start to believe in my art – it really felt that way when I bought them and still feels like it every time I look at the colors. It´s like a little boost of confidence I get just by looking at them and I realize that although I painted for three years now, I kind of doubted myself in a way. I still do this of course, it´s like every new sheet of paper that I want to fill with a painting is daring me, but I did gain more confidence now and those paints have a huge part in this. I´m so at awe how you manage to look into my very soul, Su! xxxxxxxxx

I’m so glad that the paints are bringing you pleasure and confidence. Good quality materials do make a tangible difference, and the emotional boost I think adds even more to it, so you end up with a sort of virtuous circle.
And I think our souls are quite similar in many ways. I hope you are having a wonderful, creative week my friend. xxxxxxx 🙂
