Breaking Fast the French Way

Croissant
Croissant – my favourite breakfast (water color; May 2018)

This month I´m joining The May Art Challenge created by my new awesome friend Charlie, creator of Doodlewash® and founder of World Watercolor Month™ (July) and World Watercolor Group™.

This month´s challenge celebrates everything that can make people smile and is open to anyone who wants to participate with watercolor painting and/or simply pencil or pen & ink sketches.

If you’re participating in the May Art Challenge, use the hashtag #doodlewashMay2018 when you post on all your social networks, and if you also use watercolor add the #WorldWatercolorGroup hashtag as well.

Also I want to express my profound thanks to my wonderful friend Sharon from over at Sharon Bonin-Pratt´s Ink Flare at this point for having introduced me to Charlie and his awesome world of Doodlewash!

Today´s prompt is “Breakfast”. Usually my breakfast contains of oats with various fresh or dried fruits and nuts with milk. Or, in winter, porridge added with powdered Aronia berries, dried blueberries and a chunk of dark chocolate. This is then followed by two cups of green tea.

But every once in a while I indulge in my very favorite breakfast – croissants! Best served with homemade jam and a cup of milk or chocolate.

This happens about once a month, sometimes less, and I think that´s what actually makes it so special to me. If I were to eat it everyday it surely would loose its appeal and become rather dull.

I have to admit that I painted this croissant from a picture, since it´s a normal weekday and croissants are only to be had on birthdays or at the weekend around here. But ever since I´ve painted this croissant this morning – right after my rather healthy homemade muesli – I can not stop thinking about eating one!! I think it´s going to hover around my mind all day and I hope that huge quantities of fruits and yoghurts (lunch) will make it go away, though I´m suspecting it won´t work. 😉

What´s your favorite breakfast? And how often do you indulge in it?

  1. I’m curious if you’ve given in to the croissant craving yet? 😉 Love the drawing that came from a photo – it DOES look tasty! I like having cereal for breakfast with sliced up fruit in it. Gosh now I’m hungry again!

    1. Not yet! But I have some of them in the freezer, trying to seduce me to bake them! 😂
Thanks so much for your lovely visit and comment, Christy! And I’m sorry I made you hungry. 😉 xoxo ❤

  2. This brings back lovely memories of my mum. She loved croissants but like me, she needed to avoid them because of our genetically high cholesterol. After so many electric shock treatments, she struggled with some words and croissants was one of them. I teased her relentlessly for wanting Crow’s Ants…she always laughed. 😁

    1. Aww – I’m so glad this brought some lovely memories back to you, Kerry! But the electric shock treatments sound horrible, I didn’t know that your mum had to endure those and am so sorry. I’ve heard they still use them sometimes although they have no complete knowledge of its effects and aftereffects – sounds downright frightening to me.
I’m glad though she could still laugh about you going on to want some Crow’s Ants (really funny this one!). Love!

      1. I’m so glad to hear that! I think I might be prejudiced against the treatment because of all the bad films and literature that has handled it. It’s good to know that it is actually helping people. ☺

  3. Lovely painting, Sarah, good enough to eat! 🙂 I start out with a cup of coffee, sweetened just a bit, then usually have oatmeal or yogurt for breakfast. But a breakfast favorite is pancakes or waffles, which happens only once in a while or on special occasions. I’m on to your next post, since I’m running behind. Have a wonderful day, dear friend…❤☕🥞🍳😊

    1. Thanks so much, Lauren! Oh, waffles! Totally love them and hadn’t had them in ages! Pancakes though are much more often served luckily though not for breakfast but for lunch!!
Your usual breakfast sounds very healthy and I also put a little sugar in my coffee. 😉
Have a beautiful day, dear friend! xoxo ❤

  4. I love croissants too, but there is too much butter in them, you’re right not eating them every day … your painting is lovely I would eat this croissant in a minute 🙂

  5. Ah, croissants…yes, love those too 🙂 In Belgium they have them with all kinds of delicious filling. I hope you had one or more this weekend, because it is only Monday and I am reminding you of these yummy yummy little breads again. Sorry for that, haha

      1. Me too, although I must say the ones with chocolate within are my second favorite 🙂

  6. Ah, your beautiful watercolour has worked its magic and now I long for a croissant for breakfast.
Like you though, I prefer to save it as a special treat, so I will make do with some toast and coffee (and a little homemade apricot jam). xxxx

  7. Your painting certainly made me smile! And it looks so much better than if you had painted my favorite breakfast: sausage gravy and biscuits. You can see why I don’t indulge in that one very often…..

    1. I’m so glad my painting made you smile, Ann! And I think your favourite breakfast would actually make for an interesting painting too. 😊 Funny, isn’t it, that we all shouldn’t indulge too often in our fav food? 😉

    1. Oh, I’m quite old-fashioned I have to admit. I paint with real water colors on paper, take a picture of it with my camera and then upload to my Mac. 😊 I’ve heard of illustrator gadgets where you can paint on your phone or tablet but haven’t tried it out yet.

  8. Your croissant and home made jam look deliciousssss. I know what you mean. I do not have any cadence for special breakfast. My main course to go is oat meal with dried cranberries or raisins (has to be two big scoops :)). Actually, weekend my breakfast is a bit lighter than the normal weekday..

    1. Thanks so much! Your breakfast sounds mighty healthy too and I can never stop recommending oats since they are such a great energy source and will keep you running well into the afternoon.

    1. Thanks for joining this Breakfast Club, Ortensia! Coffee is too strong for me in the morning, but at noon or in the afternoon it´s my choice of beverage as well. 😉

    1. Thank you, Iris! The French really know their way around those heavenly patisseries, right? 😉 It´s a wonder any of them manages to stay slim!! 😀

  10. A lovely and light painting and this looks so tempting! A croissant is my treat breakfast as well … a newly-baked one, just crackling apart as you bite into it is simply divine. One of my favourite breakfast was in America, a view overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, a feast of museli, berries, orange juice, herbal tea and the best yoghurt I’ve ever tasted! We went through a pot a day – I’ve tried to find something similar in the UK but failed abysmally!! Happy Painting and have a great May Art Challenge time! xx

    1. Thank you so much, Annika! Your description of the crackling apart has me salivating now!! 😂 The best croissants I ever had were in a little bakery in Andalusia – simply divine! And the best yoghurt in Greece. 😊 What a lovely memory of your time in America, the view of the Atlantic Ocean is a huge bonus!
      Have a lovely evening! xx

  11. You did such a good job of that watercolor that I’m jonesing for a croissant myself now. I can’t remember the last time I had one. Breakfast is not so pretty here. Time for my walk and some gardening before I think about food. Coffee is almost gone. Have a wonderfilled day.

    1. Thanks so much, Marlene! If I could I would magically transfer a lovely croissant up to you for a treat after your morning walk. 😉
Have a beautiful day! Hope Spring is already with you and showering you with pretty flowers in your garden!

  12. I love breakfast. When I wake up in the morning and want to get myself out of bed, when I realize it’s time for breakfast, I’m up! Though it doesn’t sound particularly creative, I love poached eggs on whole wheat toast. I love avocado toast. I love egg white omelettes with vegetable fillings. But quite honestly, I’ll eat anything for breakfast, even chicken. I guess I have an iron stomach. 🙂

    1. Me too! And second breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner and the midnight snack! 😉
I think your breakfasts sound very lovely too! And now I’m lusting after an omelette with some veggies!! 😂 Really should eat something now. 😁
