The Changing Seasons – June 2018

It´s time again for the wonderful challenge The Changing Seasons, invented by Max from Cardinal Guzman and now hosted by my dear friend Su from Zimmerbitch.

The month of June started with admiring beautiful Irises in a little park nearby. Unfortunately I forgot to reload the battery of my camera and after only one single shot it gave up on me!

In a city like Berlin there´s always much to see but I love those moments the best when you happen to stumble upon something beautifully unexpected on a walk, like I did this time in another near-by park where a group of musicians met to give an impromptu concert.

Is it needless to say that I quickly let my camera down after this shot and was happily dancing with a group of equally delighted spectators? I think it is. 😉

And after that I discovered that our little animal shelter in the same park had something irresistibly cute in store for me:

And inspired by all this new life and greenery I thought I might give it a try and paint something green myself: a single leaf of a water lily or Nymphaea

The ancient Egyptians revered the Nile water lilies, which were known as lotuses. The lotus, rising from the bottom mud to unfold its petals to the sun, suggested the glory of the sun’s own emergence from the primaeval slime. It was a metaphor of creation. It was a symbol of the fertility gods and goddesses as well as a symbol of the upper Nile as the giver of life.

This leaf however is from the Nmphaea pubescens, the hairy water lily. This plant can be found in tropical Asia, as well as in northeastern Australia and Papua New Guinea.

The leaves of this plant have fuzzy or hairy undersides and the stems are covered by the same hairs as well, hence the name “pubescens” or “hairy” of the species. This is not a characteristic that is apparent when looking at the plant from above the water though.

  1. Great photos, though I’m sorry your camera battery died on you. June is a glorious month, isn’t it? Then again, each month has its beauty and charm (mostly – ha ha). Beautiful drawing with such realistic depth. I loved the symbolism of the Nile lotus. Wonderful, Sarah.

    1. Thanks so much, Diana! June is glorious indeed – let´s hope July will be too! 😀
I´ve always been fascinated by Egyptian art and culture, even studied it for about a semester, but the hieroglyphics really were too difficult for me so I changed subjects where I didn’t need to learn a new language – lol! 😀

  2. Your painting is so delicate and lovely, Sarah, and everything about this post is beautiful and exudes joy…the iris, the concert in the park, and the adorable baby goat. Wishing you a lovely day, my friend…❤🌷🎶🐰(couldn’t find a goat emoji) 🙂

  3. You’ve enjoyed a beautiful summer so far, Sarah, and still so many days ahead of you.The iris (such a range of one color) the drummers (a community of musicians) and the baby goats (oh please, how could anyone resist?) I really like the delicate way you painted your lily leaf, letting the veins tell the story. Can’ wait to see what you post next.

    1. Thanks so much, Shari! I was really lucky that day with the musicians – it turned out they were a traveling group on their way to a festival nearby, and decided to practice in my park because that was near their hotel.
And I had lots of fun painting that leave – the veins were so fascinating to follow with the eye and I could feel myself letting go of all that stress from the past days and weeks.
Wish you a beautiful and creative day, dear friend! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much, Jacqui! I love beating the drums to and did so regularly when I was still at school, it really does have some sort of therapeutic effect, doesn’t it? Nowadays I only listen to it being played though but the effect is just the same. 🙂
Have a beautiful day, my friend!

      1. We are plotting and scheming that farm and it calls me on to get everything finished here …. the goats would definitely be a good fit. Watch this space 😉. You are a wonderful friend, Sarah and I am fortunate to know you xxxxxxxxxxx

  5. I just love your watercolor paintings so much, Sarah. They always bring a big smile to my face. And this gorgeous hairy water Lily is once again succeeding the task. Choosing watercolor as your media for painting the water Lily was a brilliant idea by the way. Great medium to render the details of the leaf too. You have done it beautifully. I’m smiling as well trying to imagine you happily dancing in the park. I’m sure the crowd enjoyed this delightful moment. 😎

    1. Thank you so much, Dominique! It was really fun painting that leave, especially since I´ve never done it before, always being a bit shy about painting flowers and such because my mum used to be a professional porcelain painter and specialized in exactly these kind of paintings. So I feel more comfortable with painting humans and animals but think it´s important to stretch your wings a little from tie to time and try out new things and test those boundaries we often set for ourselves.
I´m not so sure if me dancing in the park look any good but it came from the heart – like all dancing should be – and I bet it made people laugh which is always a good thing! 🙂 xxxxx

      1. I remember reading a post in which you talked about your mum being a porcelain painter. I thought it was a cool job and she must have been really good at it too since she was working for a well known company. I think it is brave that you aloud yourself to explore. It is scary sometimes as you already know but that’s how we make discoveries. You are an amazing artist Sarah and it is always a pleasure to see your paintings as well as your sculptures and photographs. And let’s not forget your writing. You never cease to amaze me, dear friend. Keep dancing please. xoxo

      2. Aww – thank you so much, my friend! Your words truly are like balm to my soul. 🙂 And I think you´re very right about needing to allow ourselves to explore – our minds and souls are meant to be boundless but we often chain them down by lethargy and/or our daily lives.
I meant to write a post about my mum´s art to show you what I was talking of 😉 thank you for reminding me of that!
Hope you´ll keep dancing with me! 🙂 xoxo

    1. Thanks so much, Tracy! And it really feels good to be painting again. Like a little holiday from all that stress in the past weeks. I also believe that greenery does wonders for the soul – luckily I have green fingers. 😉
Have a wonderful day, my friend! 🙂

  6. A nice collection, Sarah. Oh gosh, it’s frustrating when you go to shoot and don’t have a battery or memory card or such. I’m looking forward to seeing July’s collection. Cheers!

    1. Thanks so much, Su! I just wish I could have climbed over the fence and cuddle the goats!! But it was fun watching them playing around and doing unexpected jumps from time to time. 🙂 xxxxxxxx

      1. Our adult goats are very sweet-tempered actually, they always come near the fence for a bit ear scratching. Maybe it’s their soft cashmere coat that makes them that way. 😁

    1. Thank you, dear brother! 😉 The heatwave is going to visit here too in a day or so. Today it´s a lovely 28 degrees but then it´s going up, up , up! Will need all the water lilies I can get! 😀
      Have a beautiful week too!

    1. Thanks so much, Iris! After the last post I thought it was time for a bit cheering up. 🙂 There´s lots of music in the city now, the musicians are shooting up from the ground in good weather like mushrooms! 😀 A little walk can bring you some beautiful violin music just to be followed by a jazzy trumpet and then a Spanish guitar!
Have a beautiful week, dear friend! xoxo ❤
