The Changing Seasons – April 2019

It´s time again for the wonderful challenge The Changing Seasons hosted by my dear friend Su from Zimmerbitch!

This month is clearly dominated by one theme – flowers!

April started with my beloved cactus showering me with its beautiful flowers! This cactus is a descendent from a plant that belonged to my great-grandmother, and is well over 60 years old! Most of the time it blooms once a year (around Easter), but sometimes even twice.

Each flower gives off a few drops of super sweet nectar which I always lick up – not directly with my tongue, it’s a cactus mind you and I’m not stupid. 😉

I’m not sure if it’s okay to do so, but so far I couldn’t observe any negative side effects. Apart from the fact that I feel a bit like a hummingbird. 😉

One of my cactus flowers – isn’t it gorgeous? (April 2019)

Last year I  missed them by a week or so, the short-lived flowers of the Magnolia trees. So I took special care to catch them this year, making regular trips to a nearby cemetery that has one of these glorious and beautiful trees.

The smell was sheer overwhelming and this time I felt like one of the busy bees, flitting from flower to flower, trying to catch as many pictures as my camera could hold – which is a substantial lot! But I promise to keep it short for your sake. 😉

And then there is my ranunculus, one of the filled variety, which are pretty common I admit, but nevertheless I’m totally in love with them, especially this one, as it shows this wonderful poppy red color that I simply adore.

The petals remind me of the beautiful skirts of a Flamenco dancer, or – and this is my sweet tooth talking again 😉 : puff pastry! 😀

And these I bought just yesterday – my beloved daisies! Simple but beautiful. 🙂

Pink and white daisies – if this isn’t Spring, what is?! (April 2019)

And since I’m a firm believer that every excursion deserves a treat, I was happily indulging in this home baked Italian White Bread (one of my favorites)…

…or home baked Cream-Cheesecake after each trip!

The Amigurumi Easter bunnies were very tempted by my Cream-Cheesecake too, but opted for carrots in the end – phew! 😉 (April 2019)

But of course, this artist can not live alone from taking pictures and baking and eating. No, that wouldn’t do!

This artist simply needs to draw and paint and make pottery as well! 😀

And being in full Spring mode, I couldn’t help drawing and painting a couple of butterflies à la Maria Sybilla Merian, a German-born 17th Century naturalist and scientific illustrator, whom I have the greatest admiration for.

In 1699 she travelled to Dutch Surinam together with one of her daughters to study and record the tropical insects there.

Because of her careful observations and documentation of the metamorphosis of the butterfly, she is considered by David Attenborough to be among the most significant contributors to the field of entomology.

I’m currently in the process of painting a second butterfly on this sheet of paper (Butterfly watercolor – April 2019)

And as promised, I also worked with clay again – another yarn bowl that I hope to sell on Christmas markets later this year.

Being still in Spring mode, I chose a sheep motive. 😉

And this was it! Well, most of it, to be honest. But I think, this will do. 😉

  1. Enjoyed the April blooms! All Of them – and glad you did not miss the magnolia – also – the lady holding up her camera looks as if she might “workout” or be into weights – some serious strong arms 😉

      1. I’m not sure yet, myself, Yvette. I will have to do some research beforehand to see how much others are charging. I can’t offer them too cheap, but they also shouldn’t be overpriced. And then it also depends on how elaborate the piece is. So my guess is, about 15-20 Euros for the simple ones, and twice that for the others.

  3. With a shared love of art, books, and nature (and eating!), there would be no shortage of conversation between us. There is so many lovely pics in your post. First up, these flowers are all gorgeous but the Magnolia and the red poppy got me crushing hard. Definitely looks like the skirts of Flamenco dancers. Since I don’t have a sweet tooth, I would go straight for a piece of that Italian bread. Looks so yummy. Last but not least, your beautiful drawings and yarn bowl. Soooo beautiful. Sarah, the versatility of your talents always amazes me. I look forward seeing your May edition of The changing seasons. Much love dear friend.

    1. In that case, I would serve you the Italian Bread with some very nice French salted butter – it’s delicious! 😉
Thank you so much for your lovely comment, Dominique, you always bring the biggest of smiles on my face! 😀
I could definitely see you in a poppy red Flamenco skirt!! Just sayin’ 😉
And I know that there’s lots we could talk about, and I can’t wait to do so one! But first, Darren’s coming over and I can’t wait to here about all the fun you three are going to have! 😀
Have a wonderful and creative May! Much love! xoxo

  4. Such a beautiful and informative post Sarah! I love reading it and catching up with your month!

My favourite favourite favourite is the sheepie yarn bowl – it is soooooo adorable! I had to ask Older Daughter what a yarn bowl is so I am now smarter – what a great idea to keep yarn balls from running all over the place.

You flower captures are stunning! I didn’t know cacti could flower like this (I do not have a green thumb and have sadly killed off many a cacti). And what a heritage it has – incredible. I was showing your photos to Older Daughter and we agree that you make all the flowers come so alive … it’s the Dance of the Flower Fairies!

Thank you for sharing your work in progress – to watch you work is such a treat to see how your beautiful creations come about.

That bread and cake – yum yum yum!

    1. Aww – thank you so much for your beautiful comment, Ju-Lyn!! 😀
I only learned about yarn bowls last winter and when I did, I thought what a brilliant idea! Now I’m making several different ones and hope to sell them later this year on street markets to addicted knitters like me. 😉

And I so love how you’ve described my flower pictures – the Dance of the Flower Fairies! How utterly charming and beautiful an image!

Wishing you and your family a wonderful and creative May, dear friend!

  6. What beautiful flowers! I used to drink the nectar from honeysuckle when I was young, but I’ve never tried it from a cactus flower. I’ll have to give that a shot sometime. And I love your drawing…only you could make an insect quite that beautiful!

    1. Aww – thank you so much, Ann! Some insects are prettier than others, I think. 😉 But all are useful in their way – well, maybe apart from mosquitoes. 😉
So glad to know I’m not the only one drinking nectar from a flower! Do try the cactus ones, they really taste lovely!
      Have a wonderful day!

  7. Sarah, you are an amazing photographer, capturing the tantalizing splendor of flowers – the vibrant intensity of colors, the complex architecture of petals, their delicate balance on slender stems.

And I love that most unusual flower, the Italian Bread Loaf – please send one to me immediately so I can examine its strange qualities. I’m waiting here with my butter knife – oops, l mean, my magnifying glass. Ahem!

I’d love to attend the Christmas market with you, especially to purchase one of your yarn bowls – maybe this one with the lamb face. So charming!

How cool that Maria Sybilla Merian inspired you to paint such beautiful butterflies, spring’s uniquely transformative messenger.

For myself, I have ideas for projects I want to begin, namely an art and poetry book for each of my grandchildren. But so many projects started and I must finish them – namely, get at least one book published!

    1. Shari, I’m so sorry for the late reply!
Thank you very much for your beautiful comment – you always make me smile, but asking for a sample of that unusual flower, the Italian Bread Loaf, made me laugh out loud! 😀 How I wish I could share it with you, drink a cup of tea and chat – one day!
I always look so much forward to Spring, but this year especially even though our winter was actually quite mild.
And I was lucky to get so many lovely flowers so early this year too, naturally my camera is constantly in work mode. 😉

It would be so lovely to have you here and visit the Christmas market together! There are lots of handcraft and arty ones, that I really love. 🙂

I’ve come across Maria Merian a couple of years ago, and was instantly fascinated by her art and life. To try and paint like her now makes me admire her even more. 😀

You’ve mentioned that wonderful poetry book for your grandchildren in your last email – again sorry, I’m going to reply to that soon!! – and I think it’s such a fabulous and lovely idea! They’re going to love it! I kind of wish I was one your grandkids too!! 😉 My grandmother was not at all artistic but at least I’ve got lots of wonderful photos I can remember her by.
And who knows, maybe your books will inspire your grandchildren to do something similar themselves one day! It could be the starting point of a wonderful family tradition. 🙂

Wishing you a beautiful day and a fantastic weekend to look forward to!

  8. Puff pastry!!!! That is brilliant and now I am hungry.
Seriously; your flower photos are so beautiful, especially the Ranunculus (I’d have been happy thinking of them as flamenco dancers, but your pastry simile is sooo good), and those beautiful magnolia against the perfect blue sky.
Your bread looks divine; I love the twist in the crust, and how light it looks. Yum!
I’m always impressed by your drawing and painting, so you won’t be surprised that I think your butterflies are beautiful.
The yarn bowl is so cute; I’m sure these will sell well at Christmas. Practical and pretty.
Wishing you a May filled with flowers, food, inspiration and time to create.

    1. LOL! Sorry for making you hungry! 😉
Thank you so much for your lovely comment, Su, I realize that I only put photos of my bread in my posts to share them with you. 😉 That day I didn’t had time for anything artsy or creative, so I figured if I could make my bread look like that, it would count too! 😀
I will definitely try to keep the bulbs of this ranunculus safe through to the next year because I just love it so much. 😀
WIsh you a beautiful May with lots of flowers too – I know that your Autumn and Winter seems to differ somewhat from ours in that regard which I think is awesome by the way. 😉
