A Lifesaver – 30 Days 30 Songs

Day 11 of my new blog challenge –

Share Your Music! 30 Days 30 Songs!

If you’d like to join me, you can do this on any day you want, or also every day.

A pingback to my posts would be lovely, so that I can keep track of your favorite songs as well.

Today’s song is particularly special to me because it helped me through a very difficult time I had now almost 9 years ago.

After a severe nervous breakdown it was a downright battle to come back to life as I used to know it – a life where art, books and music mattered deeply to me.

I don’t remember the exact date, but there was a day when I listened absentmindly to the radio – more or less to cover up a very annoying tinnitus that I suffered from at the time.

When suddenly there was a stirring in my chest, a response to the music I was hearing – something I didn’t thought to be possible anymore, because my life seemed to be a black hole without any hope or joy.

Depression has that effect on most people – things that once mattered, loose all their meaning, you feel adrift in a sea of pain and sadness. At least this is how it was to me.

This song – Starlight by Muse – changed this.

I don’t know how or why. And actually, I don’t care. Because the only thing that matters to me is, that it brought me back from Zombieland.

In a way you could say that this song saved my life.

It’s almost needless to say but I do it anyway – since that day “MUSE” are one of my very favourite bands, and even if they will never know it, I owe them a huge

THANK YOU.

  1. I have heard of this band but only knew of the song Invincible. For selfish reasons, I’m so glad this band exist because otherwise we may have never met. Much love!

  2. Music has such power, doesn’t it? Like poetry (the foundation of lyrics) even if you don’t understand the technicalities of the structure, music and poetry heal and lift and inspire. Can you imagine being on that ship, recording this song? I’m so glad you found a way out of that dark hole, Sarah. You have so much to live for, you offer so much beauty on this blog. I’ve never heard this song before but it is amazing. Stay strong.

    1. Thank you so much for your beautiful words, Shari! I often think about all the things I would never have done or created if my depression had made a turn for the worse and I’m endlessly grateful for the opportunity to continue creating.
I can definitely imagine being on that ship and recording this song! It must have been a really amazing experience for the band.
It’s funny, I’ve often heard about the healing power of music before but only when I experienced it myself it began to make sense.
Having majored in German literature at school I often felt that knowing the technicalities behind poetry kind of depleted it of its magic. Sometimes not knowing helps to know actually more – if that makes any sense. 😊

      1. I truly believe that it’s not necessary to learn the technicalities about poetry in order to write outstanding poetry, Shari. Like you said – it’s part of our blood and soul and therefore it’s natural and will come to light with ot without training.

  3. I love how music has such healing power, and am very grateful to Muse for a song that touched your heart when you needed it. Muse is one of those bands I know of, but haven’t really listened to (I will now). The song is very reminiscent of a lot of U2’s music. 🙂

    1. I’ve heard about the healing power of music before but only realized the truth behind it when it worked its magic for me. I’m not very happy with latest album by Muse – but being forever in their debt I won’t say another word against it 😉. ‘Black Holes and Revelations’ is my favourite one should you come across it. ‘Drones’ is very awesome too. 😊

Music is all-powerful – it can create bridges where words are failing. I really love that about music and the people who create it.

    1. You’re very welcome, Jill. 🙂 I love that too about music – it baffles me every time when I think about it what human beings are able to create when they put their mind to it – a universal language that connects us all.

Yes, music is very powerful indeed and it can help us through all our trials and triumphs. Who doesn’t know the healing effect it has on heartbreak for example?

  4. Your description of depression is a very good one Sarah and I am so sorry that you experienced this my friend.

My ‘depression song’ is ‘World Leader Pretend’ by REM

    1. Thank you, Darren – I feel like we’re comrades in battle.
Isn’t it “funny” how you never have to describe what depression is like to someone who has experienced it as well? The feelings around it seem to be universal and don’t really need any words.

Your “depression song” is an awesome one – REM belong to my favorite bands as well.

Love and hugs, dear friend! May the force be with you! 🙂 x

      1. We are indeed comrades Sarah😍. Almost worse than depression is that feeling that a depressive episode is starting and, despite what people say, there is nothing you can do to prevent it.

Love and hugs to you too Sarah x

      2. You’re right – that’s a very scary feeling indeed. To feel the hopelessness coming back sucks out all your energy. Hope you’re not feeling like this right now, my friend? x

      3. Undecided. I see the danger signs – I realise that I have been isolating myself, starting with reluctance to do group classes at the gym. There are a lot of new things happening so it might just be that I feel a bit overwhelmed.

      4. I truly hope it’s just that you feel overwhelmed at the moment, Darren. There’s a lot going on in your life, it would be a miracle if you wouldn’t feel overwhelmed at it. Please take good care of yourself, and let me know if I can help!
