Honestly – could there be a music challenge without mentioning The Man in Black?

Of course not!

And like with all the others before, it was a hard time deciding which song to choose. In the end I opted for Hurt.

  1. I have always loved Johnny Cash, but this is the first time I’ve ever heard this song. It’s very good and with a very personal and powerful message. I think that is one of the things that made him so popular: the way he shared his life struggles through his music. It is so easy to relate to his emotions and thoughts because they are universal. And this particular song really speaks to the challenge of aging, regret and loss….

    1. I’m glad I introduced you to this song, Ann, it really is such a powerful one. And I think you’re right with what you said about his popularity. There’s something special when people open up and share their feelings and thoughts through their art work, something no one seems able to resist. It speaks right to the heart.

    1. Me too, Kerry! Oh, yes, that recording was great! 😀
P.S. Sorry for having been so absent lately on your blog, I’m planning to catch up after my blog break this month, and hope all is well with you. ❤

  2. “I will keep myself.” How many of us older folks look back with so much regret? For all of Johnny Cash’s many achievements, he still mourned the many losses. The symbolism of riches, in the paintings and the laden table, points up the enormity of absence of people who are loved. We would all give away everything for love, don’t you think? This one, the raw sound of his voice nearly breaking, is deeply affecting. Thank you for including this song in your Top 30.

    1. My pleasure, Shari. And I think you’re absolutely right – we would give away everything for love.
There’s a lot of symbolism in the song and the video and honestly, I can listen to it again and again. It’s raw and it’s beautiful and it speaks directly to the soul.

    1. It really is. Ah, you’re much better than me for having a reserve list, Darren! Mine only got longer by the day and in the end I was almost crying because I had to cut so many songs! 😂

      1. Well it started out as one list but once it got past 40 I realised it would have to be two lists. But I followed Dominique’s lead and created the second list in spotify so I can still enjoy it. Plus it might be handy if I do a part two maybe next year.

      2. Imagine me getting slightly panicked when my list hit 80 songs!! 😂 And that was just the tip of the ice-berg! 😀 Su suggested we could make this kind of music prompt a less frequent but more permanent sort of thing. We’re currently running ideas, like “Really good songs I learned to hate” and so on. Any ideas? 😀

      3. I almost wrote guitar/piano in the first place but then figured we would get complaints from trombone players etc and the list would never end. Make it ‘musical instruments’?

        Waits for complaints from beatboxers…

      4. LOL! Yes, I can see all those devastated trombone players piling up and complaining about their being excluded – again! 😀 And I’m sorry, I have to draw the line somewhere, and it starts with beatboxing. 😉

      1. Thanks for mentioning this, Manja! I really should have added this in my post because it’s one of few times that I actually like a cover version more than the original! 😀

    1. Thanks, Brian! It’s a cover version so maybe that’s why you haven’t heard it before. I actually like it better than the original by Nine Inch Nails, which is quite something because I’m normally against cover versions! 😀
