I Don’t Want Summer to End

While I couldn’t wait for Autumn to arrive last year because it has been such an awfully hot summer in 2018, this year I find myself already missing summer although it’s not really over yet.

And it doesn’t help that the weather forecast is predicting that this will be the last warm weekend!

I wonder where summer has gone to? Why is it always flying by way too fast?

It feels like I didn’t properly take advantage of my summer holidays, that I haven’t been out in the park often enough, that I didn’t eat my share of ice cream, and that I haven’t even had the time to wear all my summer dresses!!

 

And now the air is already getting crispy even though the sun is still shining, and I find myself wearing socks again which is so NOT okay with me because I want to show off my new nail polish! (I know, BIG problem! 😉 )

And this week, when I did some grocery shopping, what did I find during my hunt through the aisles?

F*****g gingerbread!!! Can you believe it?! They’re already selling Christmas sweets!!

I feel like a child trying to stem myself against strong parental arms that are tearing me away from the playground when I’m just having the best of times.

I want to scream: “No! No! You can’t make me! NO, I WON’T HAVE SUMMER TAKEN AWAY FROM ME!!!”

And just like a child I have to watch helplessly as the temperatures drop, and drop and drop…

So, I made this little watercolor of a jug of lemon ice tea, hoping that just by looking at it, it will evoke summer memories when it’s actually going to be so cold that I will tightly clutch my mug of tea or coffee with both hands instead.

Hey Sarah, I hope all is well with you !! … I always enjoy the end of Summer / beginning of Autumn because every year since 2015 I take a few days off to go the Pyrenees (beautful mountains in South western France) with my best friend and we do a lot of walking there in wonderful mandscapes and take in plenty of fresh air..

    We first decided this annual trip because my father passed away while he was still young and I spreaded his ashes in a mountain torrent where he liked to go fishing and my friend went with me and fell in love with the place… so now we are going there twice a year … and I get to visit my father at the same time.

    1. That’s such a wonderful thing to do and share with your best friend! I can see why you like this change of season then! I’ve never been to the Pyrenees but it’s definitely on my list! Did you ever think about walking the Camino de Santiago? I would love to but I’m not sure if I’m up for it. 😀

    1. Thank you so much, Tina! 😀 And I have to admit and gave in and bought some gingerbread already – and ate it 😉 – because it was just too tempting and fresh! 😀

  4. That’s a very impressive watercolor! Looks so real, I could almost pour a glass. Weather has been very odd here this summer. Not as hot, much more rain than in the last 7 years and no bugs on the back of my house. But unlike most people, I’m partial to cooler weather. We slid into Autumn in a big hurry. I miss the longer days and find getting up is harder when it’s still dark. I have no tips. I feel the same way about summer. There has been no gentle arrival of any of the seasons lately. Love your description of leaving summer. So perfect.

      It’s the same with our weather here, summer wasn’t as hot as expected (and feared) but that only means that I don’t feel ready for the long dark days ahead. Getting out of bed is a real nightmare when it’s still dark outside I think. I even picked up my knitting needles again, making socks in preparation for the cold days and nights to come which is about the only fun in winter, well, that and baking since that’s something I always neglect during the summer. 😉

I do love the chillness of the mornings and blue skies and sun shining though, the leaves havent even dropped yet and it’s slowly getting darker… winter is coming 😉 Summer never lasts long enough in Europe! Have a lovely weekend. Oh, love your art work -reminds me of cool refreshing drinks in the garden on a sunny (summer) day! WAHHHHHH xxx

      And yes – winter is coming! 😉 I still haven’t watched the final season of GoT!!! Guess I’m keeping that for winter – lol!

  6. I feel like I didn’t have a summer, Sarah. It never really got hot here, and I spent a lot of beautiful days in the car, or in worse places. And the rain came early. But I won’t fight it. I like all the seasons. (And there’s always next summer.) Beautiful summery painting!

    1. Thank you, Diana! It’s been very similar around here, summer started being as hot as it can get after which temperatures were sort of moderate. And you’re right – we shouldn’t spend our energy on something we can’t fight anyway. 😊

  9. I’m feeling so much as you are, I felt like you were inside my head when you wrote this. I love the painting accompanying your post. Hopefully, it will give you some measure of comfort as Summer skips mockingly away to the Southern Hemisphere.

  10. Oh, Sarah I feel the same way!!! I am not ready for Summer to end, even though it’s the middle of September already. I don’t know what happened this year…it’s warmer than usual now, but it’s still not the real Summer!!!

    1. That’s such a relief to know that I’m not the only one with this “problem”, Ann!! So many people around here apparently can’t wait for it to be cold again, already wearing boots and winter coats which I personally think is a tad too much (15-16 degrees Celsius). I for one would be happy to wear my Birkenstocks all year round!

  11. Summer is my favorite season. I always hesitate to put my beach bags away. I do not like to think it is the last time of the season to go to the beach. Throughout the house, little memories of summer are around all year. At Christmastime, I have ornaments of shells, and I have pieces of beach glass out all the time. I think it is the carefree ease of summer we like to hold onto…the remembrance of our childhood when school was out for a holiday.

    1. That sounds so lovely what with your beach souvenirs lying around even at Christmastime, Linda! And I totally get not wanting to part with your beach bags, I have the same thing with my sandals but there is a point when my feet complain about the cold and then I simply have to give in! 😂

  19. Your watercolour is beautiful and masterful Sarah. I love how the jug and ice especially look so real.
    You know my feelings about our summers, but I can relate to the loss of daylight hours. I hated the short, gloomy day of English winters when we lived there.

    1. Thanks so much, Su! It was quite fun trying to paint this, especially because it’s not what I usually paint. The downside of this painting though is, that it makes me thirsty every time I look at it! 😀
      Apart from that brutally hot June our summer was relatively mild though with still no rains which is really bad for our forests and crops.
      If we had a proper Autumn I think I wouldn’t mind it so much, but usually we jump right into winter with temperatures dropping so low you need to turn the heating on in October!

  20. Love your jug of lemon ice tea. I can appreciate your End-of-summer blues, as you face the prospect of colder temperatures. Remember, though, autumn brings the rich red, yellow, and brown tones that are beautiful to behold 🙂

    Summer has become so hot here in Southern California that I’m forced to stay indoors–I work from home–during the daytime to avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke. I look forward to the cooler temperatures in autumn when I can spend more time outdoors.

      I can only imagine how hard summer must be in Souther California, heat strokes can be quite dangerous. I hope that cooler temperatures are soon going to come your way so that you can enjoy going out of doors more often again!

I think if you keep creating beautiful pieces, such as this, that remind you of summer, it will get you through those cold and dark days of winter.   23. Your pitcher of lemonade and the lemons is absolutely beautiful, Sarah. The colors of the lemons and cucumbers (?), the reflections and glass surfaces, all well rendered.

    The heat is pretty high here in Southern California, and will probably remain so through the rest of this month, possibly well into October. I’m looking forward to our rainy season, not likely to happen till very late this year or even next year.

    1. Thanks so much, Shari! Yes, those are cucumbers, they really taste nice in lemonade. 😀 I’ve been experimenting a lot this summer with what to add to water to give it some zest: slices of ginger and lemon, mint leaves and lemon or all three together! 😀

      After a hot June summer was relatively mild this year, still not enough rain though and our forests and crops are suffering badly. They even had to use water sprinkler in our park which was never a necessity before.
      I hope the temperatures will drop a bit for you and that your rainy seasons starts on time!

  25. I am really with you on the feeling for not wanting to have summer time moves by fast. This year it has been a hot summer but I still do like it very much. I know the sign of fall is already here. Yes, it makes the weather much more pleasant now but knowing the day light is getting shorter makes me wants summer to stay longer.

    Your lemonade looks fantastic and it definitely helps 🙂

    You seemed to have a very cold winter last year, so I am not surprised that you are not anticipating it. I am dreading our summer. However, I’ve decided that I am going to try to be a little more intrepid than usual. Maybe we could be intrepid together in our respective part of the world?

      Actually last winter wasn’t as cold as it can be around here. I think it’s more or less the loss of daylight hours that I’m dreading. But since there’s nothing I can do about I really should work on being more intrepid about it all. 😊
