The Changing Seasons – December 2019

It’s time again for the wonderful challenge The Changing Seasons hosted by my dear friend Su from Zimmerbitch!

The month started with me having made prints from some of my watercolor paintings for this year’s Christmas cards to my dear (blogging) friends.

Printed Christmas cards (Dec. 2019)

This proved to be a more arduous task than I had anticipated because I wasn’t really happy with how most of the colors came out of the printer, being either to bright and dense or completely off target.

What I learned from this lesson is that I should start with this around the beginning of November next year! 😀 (And probably learn more about calibrating cameras, scanners, printers… )

At least this time almost all of my cards seem to have arrived at their various destination which made me really happy! ( So far 7 out of 9 – or as Trekkies like to say: Seven of Nine 😉 )

More work was needed in the creative department when I noticed that many of my glazes had become either too mushy or dried-up for use. So I spent a whole afternoon grinding glazes with a mortar and pestle which is so not what I like most about being a potter! 😂

If you’d like to watch a little video of me mixing a glaze, follow the link to my Instagram account here!

My pottery students were extremely busy and spend the whole of December creating gifts for friends and family, some of which you can see here:

Christmas gifts created by my pottery students – do you see the little owl on the right? It was given to me as a gift from one of my students, I was the happiest of teachers that day! 🙂  (Dec. 2019)

Some of the kids decided to not have their pieces of art glazed because they liked it better that way. (Dec. 2019)

And this little reindeer stole my heart:

But the kids were not the only ones busy making handcrafted gifts, I was still busy being a little Christmas elf myself. 😉

And because I wasn’t sure if my painting would be recognized as such, I added this little text on the back of the card. 😉 It also gave me an excuse to practice my hand lettering (which obviously requires more practicing 😉 ).

Some of you might already have seen my little crocheted Rudolph, but I thought I’d add here the before picture as well. This was also a handmade gift for a friend. 🙂

There’s only one thing better than making gifts – and that’s getting them yourself! 😀  😉

My lovely friend from over at A wonderful sheep has send me one of her beautiful postcards and even added these awesome stickers:

And my dear friend Su from over at Zimmerbitch has send me a hand-painted Christmas card – isn’t it the most beautiful Christmas tree?

And there was even more mail in my mailbox this month: a beautiful Christmas card and calendar by my friend Chris from over at Milford Street!

And one of the best Christmas gifts was this beautiful red squirrel that I had the privilege to take pictures from on Christmas Day:

Hope you had a lovely month as well!

  4. I love seeing both your work and also your students’! Do you teach all ages? And looking at your December in review I am struck by how diverse your creativity is! Painting, ceramics, crochet… what CAN’T YOU DO? Such talent! Hehe, but also I’m curious, of the different mediums, do you have a like a “first love?” Something you always can come back to like a comfort food?

    1. Thanks so much! I only teach children, ages 10-12. I’ve never taught adults and guess I would feel terrified at the prospect! LOL!
And rest assured – there’s loads of stuff that I can’t do and that I’m very careful not to mention here. 😉
Your question if I have a first love kind of medium made me thinking, and I’m astonished to say that I think I love all the different mediums equally – and to me every creative outlet is like comfort food! 😀
Do you have a favorite one?

      1. Hmm so I think collage and paper crafts are my first love, because that’s what I did for fun as a child and where I feel comfortable. But I’d like to explore drawing and painting more this year!

      2. That doesn’t surprise me at all. 😉 And I know you’ll have fun exploring more art this year, and I already look forward to see what you come up with!!

  5. I never thought about making prints of original cards. Since I don’t draw or paint, I guess it wouldn’t come to my mind. It’s wonderful you have so many outlets for your creativity to flow. I had a neighbor teach me to paint her ceramics and I fell in love with it at 15. I’d never had any artistic outlets other than that one. Coming into it so late, I realize how important it is for children to be exposed to all kinds of art forms. I’m glad you are doing that for them. Happy New Year, Sarah. I’ll be asleep when the year changes.

    1. Thank you so much, Marlene! I guess I should have had the idea of making prints a bit earlier, but better late than never, right? 😉 Which is also what I think of finding a creative outlet – it’s never too late to be creative, be it drawing, sewing or painting on ceramics, the last one being awfully difficult I find!! But you’re also right to say that children should be exposed to arts very early on. I notice how important it is for them to have a creative outlet, to balance the everyday stress at school – video games are no real substitute for that.
Wishing you a Happy and Creative New Year, Marlene! ❤

  8. My goodness Sarah what a wonderful read 🙂 Start in November? I would start in July as I dislike it when the print isn’t what I want too. I just adore the reindeer and the crocheted elephant too. You are quite talented and am envious of your calligraphy. Su’s love tree is so good. The red squirrel is a treat. Have a wonderful and creative 2020 Sarah, Happy New Year

    1. Thank you so much, Brian! ❤ You're right, I should start in July as well! 😀 If it weren't for the lost cards from last years, where I'd send original artwork, I'd still be doing it because of that damn printer getting all the colors wrong! 😂
Wishing you a beautiful and creative New Year as well, and lots of rain soon to come!!! Happy New Year, Brian! ❤

  9. That time already? Must work on mine!

The card you sent me is lovely, Rudolph is super-cute and so is the squirrel. Your students are so talented.

And your mention of 7 of 9 has me thinking wistfully of Jeri Ryan……

I loved watching Voyager – Jeri Ryan is just superhumanly awesome, typical Borg! 😄
