A New Challenge

First: Wishing you all a very Happy and Creative New Year!!!

I’m usually not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions – since they never seem to work anyway! – but this year I made one tiny one, and that is to allow myself more time for photography, and to make an effort to improve my skills, and also to share what I come up with – be it amazing (I wish!), adequate (more likely!) or simply hopeless (I hope not!!).

Which is why I’m going to try and participate in this beautiful photo challenge “Lens Artists Photo Challenge” from now on. 😀

Ann-Christine’s challenge for this week’s Lens Artists Photo Challenge #78 – Special Spot Shots is to share our very special spot shots. So here they are!

“If you don’t know history, you don’t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.”

– Michael Crichton

Being guilty of having studied History of Art and Classical Archeology I can not help but feel right at home in every museum or gallery in the world.

Fortunately Berlin has many excellent museums to show, some of which are located on the famous “Museum Island”.

“I believe in walking out of a museum before the paintings you’ve seen begin to run together. How else can you carry anything away with you in your mind’s eye?”

– Elizabeth Kostova

“A beautiful thing is never perfect.”

– Egyptian proverb

From a young age I was especially interested in Egypt, that is its ancient culture and art. If you ever have the chance to visit Berlin, I urge you to stop by the New Museum that houses one of the world’s finest collections of Egyptian art.

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”

– Jorge Luis Borges

“When in doubt, go to the library.”

– J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

And who isn’t in love with libraries? They belong without the shadow of a doubt to my very favorite spots in the world, and it doesn’t matter how big or small they are – that unique smell of used books always tells you that you’re home.

“The only thing you that you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.”

– Albert Einstein

“What we see before us is just one tiny part of the world. We get in the habit of thinking, this is the world, but that’s not true at all. The real world is a much darker and deeper place than this, and much of it is occupied by jellyfish and things.”

-Haruki Murakami

“In the creative process, my ego has always been a huge tyrant … a dictator and kind of rude and very misleading, because sometimes when I’m doing something, I say, “This is great! This is fantastic! Very genius!” And 20 minutes later, I feel like a dead jellyfish. “You are a stupid a**hole. This is a piece of sh*t. Nobody will care about it.””

– Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu

Life in a big city such as Berlin, well in any city I believe, can be very hectic at times, and so it’s good to know a few places where you can simply sit still for a while and let your thoughts flow… just like jellyfish in their water tanks.

“We need the tonic of wildness…At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.”

― Henry David Thoreau, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods

And of course, what’s even better than the imitation of nature, is nature itself. That’s where I like to be the most and where I feel completely at peace. The following pictures were made during my last holidays in Spain.

I hoped you enjoyed my special spots, and I’d love to hear more of yours!

  1. Such a wonderful post embodied by the harmony of art, culture and nature. I love your photos Sarah, espiecially those of the jellyfish and the ZLB in Berlin, and of course the one with the cat resting —purrfect! So interesting to read all the quotes that you choose for each of these pics. I’m looking forward to seeing your take on the next challenge my friend. Hugs.

  2. Hi – wonderful post and can relate the most with that awesome quote about leaving the museum to soak it up before overwhelming kicks in… “believe in walking out of a museum before the paintings you’ve seen begin to run together”
I feel that way in large museums –

And like how you ended with nature – art and beauty all around.
Happy new year and I hope the challenge helps you reach your goals in 2020.
I know the various challenges help me keep creativity flowing – with the right break time of course – hahah
And hope your week is going well

    1. Thanks so much for your lovely comment, Yvette! Wishing you a wonderful and creative 2020 too!! ❤
I used to walk through a museum until I've seen every single exhibit, standing in front of it and trying to soak it up even though my limit was already reached. These days I've finally learned that, if you can afford it, it's better to go several times and split the exhibition up so that you actually can remember what you've seen. 🙂

      1. Oh if there is a cost to visit that does make a difference in how you soak it up – a lot of our museums are free – but they did have paid exhibits or events –
And wishing you a good weekend, Sarah

      2. Our museums have quite high entry fees, Yvette, which is an absolute shame as most of the ones in London for example are free as well. I was lucky that I could visit them for free as an history of art student.

      3. oh that is so sad that admission is high and glad you were able to go while in student mode.
and maybe artists should be able to go free all the time – just to thank you guys for all that you do….
        🙂

      4. Ha! I think that would be a perfect solution, granting all artist free entry – especially since I believe there’s an artist hidden somewhere in everyone of us. 😉

      5. Oh that was so sweet of you to note that everyone has that art side – and it sure is hidden in some folks – and then in others it really is more of their calling – like with you – and how you have talent in crafts and arts and a nice people side.
The social intelligence helps with your art teacher side too – eh?

      6. I think it does, Yvette. 😉
I like that you call it a calling – that’s exactly how it feels to me! The urge to create is simply to strong to ignore it, and bad things happen when I do, like depression.

  3. Sarah, this is such a wonderful post to begin the New Year. Your photography is excellent, I enjoyed every image. It was so interesting to read all the quotes that inspire you as they’re each worthy of thinking about and also reveal a bit about you. You’ve reminded me that I need to visit the many museums near me. I can’t wait to read your next entry for Special Spot Shots. And I’m also looking forward to seeing your art as you create it.

    1. Thank you very much, Shari! It’s been fun looking through my photo archives and finding quotes to go along with – there were many more I could have add but thought it better to keep a few for future posts. 😉 Next theme for the challenge is “A window with a view” which I’m already busy preparing! It’s also enormous fun to see what the other lens-artists come up with. 😀
Oh, yes, there are many wonderful museums in your area – I’m relying on you to show me around those when I come to visit. 😉

  4. I love your photos and especially those of your favorite spots. That cat on the rocks is amazing as is the color of the water. I’m wishing you a very creative and happy 2020 too. We always are our toughest critic but you didn’t have that quote there. I saved many of the others. Perfect. Hugs.

    1. Thanks so much, Marlene! Oh, yes! We are indeed our toughest critic! I think I’ve internalized this one so much, that I simply forgot to mention it – lol!
Glad you found many of the other quotes worth saving, it was fun looking for them. 🙂
That cat and I had a very special relationship – she loved the tuna I was bringing her, and I loved her. 😀
Have a happy and wonderfilled 2020! Hugs!

  7. I love all the quotes, especially the Michael Crichton one – oh, and the ones about libraries. So jealous – you live in an art mecca!

And you are being WAY too hard on yourself, your photos are excellent. Black and white baby, very nice.

    1. Hehe! It is an art mecca for sure Lani! 😉 There a few places as blessed with so many world-class museums as Berlin, New York and London come to mind first. 😊
Thanks so much, it was fun hunting for the quotes to go along with my pics. 😄
I’m a sucker for black and white photos! 😄

Love your perspective from those pictures of the museums. You have good eyes getting those angles. Definitely the last picture of the cat…

  10. Happy New Year to you as well, Sarah! This is a lovely gallery of special spots – so well photographed and with quotes that go well with your images. Both colour and monochrome are well chosen too. And we seem to have the same sweet spots…libraries, museums and nature. So glad you made that resolution!…I seldom make any nowadays – for the same reason you seldom do it.
Favorites? – all of them, but especially love your perspective of the pharaoh and love that cat image. Culture and nature – the essence of life.

    1. Thanks so much for your lovely comment, Leya!! It’s the first new year’s resolution in years for me! Will see how it works. 😉 But since it does involve something I love I’m hopeful to see it through. 😄 It’s been quite tricky to get behind the pharao as there wasn’t much room! 😂 So glad you enjoyed this post!

  11. Oh yes do so join in photo challenges Sarah. I love the B&W photos. The quotes go well with the images. Have a look at the Ragtag Daily Prompt too. They can also give your writing creativity a chance to shine as well (A bit biased as I am a host on the last Thursdays of the month)
Get that camera out and click away to happiness in 2020 🙂 🙂

  14. Beautiful photos, Sarah. Museums and libraries….I get lost in those. Two of my very favorite places to be. And I would love to curl up on the rock with that little cat and listen to the ocean roar.
