The Changing Seasons – March 2020

It’s time again for the wonderful challenge The Changing Seasons hosted by my dear friend Su from Zimmerbitch!

I think you’ll all agree that March 2020 will be a memorable one for all of us.

The ongoing worldwide Corona/Covid-19 crisis has had an enormous and unprecedented impact on all our lives, and I’m not just talking the lack of toilet paper here but what the virus and the situation is doing with us on a mental as well as on a physical level.

Self-isolation and social distancing are the things that people will probably struggle more with than they were aware of at the beginning of the crisis.

Humans are sociable beings, and not just because living in a community has obvious benefits in terms of survival, but because we do not cope well with being alone and lonely for too long a time, at least most of us don’t.

And yet, it has become mandatory that we do exactly that – no one knows for how long but we all hope that it will be over rather sooner than later.

In the meantime it seems important to me that we keep ourselves as occupied as possible, and I don’t mean watching TV non-stop. 😉

Even though I do have my dark moments as well, I know how to keep busy, especially creative wise. This does not only help pass the time, but also improves your mood enormously.

So I’ve come up with two simple projects to stay creative and busy in the last weeks, both of which I’m going to share with you here. (All materials should be available online if you don’t happen to have them lying around in your home.)

Project One

The first one is pretty easy, and also a lot of fun: all you need is colored paper, washi tape, a pair of scissors and a pen to craft your own Easter or Spring greeting cards for friends and family.

Project Two

The second one is a little bit more time-consuming (which shouldn’t be much of a  problem at the moment 😉 ).

For this project all I needed were: plain t-shirts, textile colour, paper, transparent/cling foil, a carpet knife and a brush.

I chose a silhouette of Mary Poppins

You can either print out a design of your choice or simply draw it (silhouettes work best).

You then have to melt the foil to the back of your paper using an iron (google diy transfer paper if you’re unsure about this step).

Cut-out Mary Poppins

Next you cut out your design, and then apply the transfer paper on your shirt using the iron again. This will prevent your design from accidentally slipping when you apply the colour.

Apply the colour with a brush and let dry for at least 6 hours (use a cardboard or newspaper underneath so the paint doesn’t stain the back of your shirt).

Another design I chose shows a stag and a squirrel, even better to make out in the next photo!

Iron your shirt inside out, this will fix the colour, making it washable at 40°.

Final step: wear your upcycled t-shirt with pride and a smile on your face! 😊

Hope these gave you some ideas on how to spend your time at home, and/or at least made you smile!

Take care and stay safe!

  1. I was so happy when you said washi tape!!! Quite a few people I’ve encountered in the West don’t know that’s called washi tape. These tapes are sooo cute and I like how they can be semi transparent. The shirt idea is so creative and didn’t know you could iron the special colour on with just an iron. Here in Australia we are all asked to stay home (though it’s getting better and some states are reopening). I’ve been working from home, so really it isn’t too much spare time on my hands. And when I’m not working it’s doing the grocery run or house cleaning 😂 You look sooo cute in the shirts, and are one very arty crafty girl 😍 Hope you are doing well and staying safe 💕

    1. Thank you so much for your lovely comment, Mabel! I wonder, how do they call washi tape instead then? Just tape? I so love it, it’s so versatile and you can use it to decorate almost everything. 😀
It’s a special kind of textile colour, and you do need to iron it for at least 5 minutes but otherwise it’s really that simple. Wasn’t even very expensive and I still have so much left!
Hope you and yours are all well too! Take care and stay safe! ❤

      1. Haha, I’ve heard many in the western world call it as just ‘tape’ or ‘colourful tape’. They aren’t wrong, but I think washi tape sounds better 😂

I hope you get to do more arts and crafts soon. They are great to pass the time and so fun! You stay safe too ❤

    1. Thanks so much, Iris! I try to see the positive aspects, like having enough time at my hands to do all those projects I always wanted to do but never found the time! 😀 Stay safe, healthy and creative, dear friend! Love&hugs! xoxo ❤

  3. I loved your cards and was so happy to see mine in the mix. 😉 Your designs turned out really well for a stenciled process. I painted on t-shirts once upon a time and really loved doing it. Then other hobbies took over. But at least even now, I never run out of things to do. 😉 Happy crafting and happy Easter. Only one week away. Social distancing is very hard on humans. Even those that like their alone time.

    1. Thanks so much, Marlene! Textile crafting is very fun indeed and I’m already looking out for new projects to begin. 😉
Wishing you a very Happy Easter and Spring! Stay safe!

  4. In some says, the social isolation is just as bad as worrying about getting sick! But it’s what we have to do in order to keep the numbers down, so we do it. Thanks so much for these creative ideas, especially the cards, because that’s easy enough for me to do. I love the shirts too, but since I’m babysitting for my grandson these days, I don’t think I’ll be able to do that. But still, creativity is so essential at times like this…it keeps us calm and happy, which is sorely needed right now. Thanks, Sarah!!! And happy Easter, a little early!

    1. You’re very welcome, Ann! And I do hope you find some time to do these cards with your grandson, it’s really a lot of fun and easy too. 😀
Wishing you a very Happy Easter too! Take care!

  5. Love your creative projects. I was trying to get a little DIY last night but I’m definitely limited. They’ve closed all those types of stores, even in the grocery store, arts and crafts sections have been closed off. But I can live vicariously through you 😉 Who’s that good-looking model?

    1. Thanks so much, Lani! Did you have a look online? I know that Amazon for example still delivers at least here and they have all the stuff you might need to let off some creative steam. 😉 Also there are many alternatives for materials like cereal cardboard for drawing or for making collages etc. I’m sure there must be tons of videos out there that would help. 🙂
That model? Well, I hired her online too of course. 😉

      1. It’s strange, a friend of mine shared on social that Thailand is no longer sending international mail, so I’m not sure if they are receiving it too? I can’t imagine, but the whole thing doesn’t make sense, so I’m just going to wait – the govt seems to change its mind almost every day.

      2. It’s the same with our government, Lani – one day we all should wear mask, even if they’re only kitchen paper, the next they tell us it’s bullocks (which it is), and people get completely confused. I was wondering about the mail too, some countries seems to have stopped it… very sad about that since it’s such a nice way to let people know that you think about them. And we could all just wash our hands after reading the mail so…

    1. Thanks so much, Tracy! It was a really fun project that kept me busy for several days: printing out the design, cutting, ironing, waiting, shooting, editing… I was busy the whole week! LOL! I could imagine that you’d come up with some awesome designs for shirts too. 😉

  6. I love the craft ideas in your post, Sarah! (Also I recognize some of the washi tape on the bunny ears :D) You tempt me with your homemade tee shirts… I haven’t gotten into fabric crafts yet but I just might have to soon… :DD Love the photos of you modeling the shirts ❤

    1. Thanks so much! I knew you’d recognize the washi tape – it’s so beautiful! I take it your card hasn’t arrived yet? Will keep my fingers crossed that it will soon be with you. 😉
And you should definitely try out fabric crafts, it’s enormous fun (and mess, but that can be fun too 😉 )! And your own drawings would be so perfect for it!!! ❤

      1. I haven’t gotten your card yet but I’m sure it will arrive soon (positive thinking). I’ve been getting mail in batches, so nothing for a week or two and then like 3 cards in one day! I’ll definitely let you know if I make my own t-shirt… I actually don’t have any plain t-shirts to use now, but I think I might have some canvas bags that could use decorating 😀

  8. How sweet of you to share some fun and creative projects to fill up our time. I love the tees and you’re a fabulous model, lol, but I’ll probably have to stick with the easy bunny cards. 🙂 A great way to let people know I’m thinking of them. Thanks so much for the lovely smile! ❤

      1. I am doing quite well Sarah thank you 🙂 Self isolation is easy for me as I am isolated most of the time anyway. I am careful when I have to go to town. Hope you are finding more fabulous things to create 🙂 ❤

    1. Thanks so much, Su!! 😀 I thought there might be parents out there desperate for some distractions for their kids and themselves so a little DIY post seemed in order. 😉
And I’ll let you into a little secret – I might about 200(!) shots that day in one hour! LOL! I so hate modeling and prefer to stand behind a camera. 😂

      1. I sent the link to your post to a friend with children for exactly that reason!

I know what you mean about being behind the camera — and you may have taken a lot of shots, but the ones you used are great!!

  9. This is a fun and inspiring post, Sarah, and I love how you’re sharing your fun crafts with us. I love the photos of you in your cute new shirts. You’re right about humans being social creatures. I think the home quarantine is especially tough on school age kids, who identify themselves as part of their “group.” and elderly people who are desperate for socialization under the best of circumstances. And now, this.
I think I see my card peeking back at me – pretty funny, given that it’s also peeking at me from my bulletin board. Thank you again, and happy spring to you.

    1. Thanks so much for your wonderful comment, Shari! How funny that my card is winking at your from two different places at once. 😉 I imagine your grandkids are also desperate to see their friends again? I hope their parents, and you via FaceTime?, can keep them busy with fun projects! Stay safe and healthy! ❤

  10. The bunny cards are adorable. I am now a GrandMummy (to a little girl now 10 months old) and I think even I can manage to make her a lovely Easter card and if I get a move on, it will arrive just in time for her first Easter – locked down in London. Love your modelling shots and absolutely adore those T-shirts – I can’t decide which is my favourite. Indecisive is my middle name!! Xx

  11. How lovely to see those photos of you Sarah!
I was delighted to receive one of those lovely cards this week. I have already given you progress reports on their way through the quarantine that my wife has imposed on incoming mail. There is now a big envelope of seeds lying on the mat and it is messing with my head not being able to open it!
We posted these posts at almost the same time. Great minds thinking alike again.
I love the t-shirts too – what a great idea!
    Stay safe my friend. x

    1. Thank you, Darren! 🙏💕
I’m glad the card made it through the quarantine. 😉 Poor you for having to wait for the big envelope of seeds to go through the same process!! 😂 Maybe you could promise Susan to wash your hands really, really well after having a look inside? 😉 x
