The Changing Seasons – June 2020 & Corvid 2020 Wrap-Up

It’s time again for the wonderful challenge The Changing Seasons hosted by my dear friend Su from Zimmerbitch!

And also, because I failed to do so yet, I’m including my wrap-up for Tracy‘s wonderful Corvid 2020 Weekly Challenge, that, like all good things have to at one point, has come to an end.

I haven’t taken many pictures in June, mostly because I didn’t feel like it, and also because there wasn’t much to take pictures of in the first place.

Mainly I’ve been stalking bumblebees (do you think they’re going to sue me?), and tried taking pictures of them mid-flight.

The best day of the month, well, of the whole year so far, was yesterday when I visited the Berlin Zoo again, and for the first time in my life saw our baby panda bears (Pit and Paule) for real (and not just on video)!!! (In case you want to have a look at one of the videos, click here

Berlin has been lucky in having one of the few zoos worldwide that are allowed by the Chinese Government to have pandas, and late last winter two panda babies were born here.

Because of the Corvid crisis however visitors were kept from seeing the pandas as it was feared too many people would stand too close to each other, and thus increase the risk of infection.

So imagine my surprise yesterday when I saw people waiting in line in front of the panda garden! Fortunately the line wasn’t very long, and after 15 minutes I was granted access.

Oh, the joy I felt! It came as a surprise to me that I was so giddy with excitement and happiness since, hey, I’ve been watching videos of them quite often recently. But it’s so very, very different to see them for real! I couldn’t stop smiling and ooh-ing and aww-ing at everything they did, which was surprisingly much because they were playing around with each other and their panda mama.

I was so giddy that I fear my pictures are lacking somewhat in their usual quality, like when I took pictures of them standing in front of the window with the sun behind my back! 😉

But I’m including them anyway, because they’re the only ones I got. 😀

Maybe not as cuddly as the panda bears but I was fascinated to spot it anyway, a juvenile Bearded vulture!

And the King vulture was beautifully posing for me and very patient:

As always, I make sure to visit the sea lions when I’m at the zoo:

And it is as if this White-necked raven knew, that I was planning a wrap-up for Tracy’s Corvid Challenge and put himself in the limelight:

  1. Animals are so therapeutic! So glad you finally got to see the Babies! and that they lifted your spirits.
I am very taken by the King Vulture – he has such an interesting visage and that expression: priceless!

    1. They are indeed!! Planning another trip this upcoming week. 😉
The King vulture was amazing! It felt like he thoroughly enjoyed having his pictures taken. 😀

  2. I don’t think I’ve been to a zoo in 40 years. I do see what I’m missing though. Loved all the photos of moms and babies as well as the birds. Everyone there seemed to enjoy having their photo taken. Another month GONE! So very quickly. I always feel like I’m racing time. Keep hanging in there and let me know how it’s going there. I think many times of trying to get back there for a long visit once restrictions are lowered and we can travel again.

    1. Oh, that’s so sad that you haven’t visited a zoo in all that time, Marlene. Although I have to admit that I struggled to go there when I was younger, I just couldn’t stand to see the caged in animals. But nowadays they do so much to make it all much more pleasant for them.
Time really flies, doesn’t it? I don’t get half the things done I plan to and think I should simply stop making plans – lol! Only makes me feel bad when I don’t meet the goal.
It would be so lovely to have you visit Germany, Marlene, and we have to meet if/when you manage to do so!! Maybe the baby pandas have grown a fair bit by then, but I promise they’ll just be as cute as they are now. 😉 Take care!

  3. You are so lucky to see baby panda bears!!! We finally went to our zoo last month, (with reservations, masks and social distancing), and had such a nice time showing my grandson around. But we don’t have any baby pandas…that’s really something special. I also liked your photos of the bees…those were good. Take care, Sarah!

    1. Thank you, Ann! Oh, we’re really so lucky with the pandas!
And I’m so happy that you got to go to the zoo too with your grandson, I’m sure you had a wonderful time even with all those restrictions. We’ve become quite accustomed to them now, although of course, there’s still thinking back to those good old days…
Anyway, we have to do our best and small sacrifices like wearing masks are doing a big difference. Hope you’ll stay healthy! The numbers from the US are so shocking. Take care!

      1. Thanks, Sarah! Knock wood, I still don’t know of anyone personally who has had it, although I do know of “friends of friends” or family of friends. Our figures are high, especially in densely-populated areas and areas that were hubs for international travel (New York, Chicago, Atlanta, etc.) But we will get through this. In St. Louis, our hospitals were never anywhere near their capacity, and the rate of hospitalizations continues to go down. Hope that continues….and it’s why I wear my mask! (And you’re right, the zoo was still fun. It was just a visit to the zoo, pandemic style!)

      2. So glad to hear that things are nowhere as crazy or scary as in other areas, Ann. Still I think it’s very sensible to wear a mask and I’ll continue to do so as well. 😊

    1. Thank you, Gill! The pandas are super cute, wish you could see them for real! All’s well here and hope you’re well too? Have a fabulous weekend! xx

      1. Yes, I’m great thank you Sarah. I went to visit friends at the weekend and even managed to have a drink in a riverside pub. It was so lovely, back to some kind of normality. I would love to see those pandas for real too. I’ll let you know if I ever get to Germany x
Hope you had a good weekend too x

      2. I’ve heard that the pubs are open again – let’s hope people will be sensible. Listening to the news has me wonder how long it will take to get our normal lives back, if at all. 😔
The pandas (and I) would be delighted to welcome you in Germany! Xx

      3. I hope so! I don’t want to go into lockdown again, although it seems to be a possibility! But, maybe it’s the media scaremongering to make people be sensible!

  4. Love this nature themed post! How did you manage to catch those bees? The photos are stunning. They would be right at home in a National Geographic spread. And the Kinng vulture portrait was very striking too. I am glad you got to see the baby pandas in real life– we all need a bit of luck and happiness these days ♡

    1. Aww – thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed this post. 😀 All praise belongs to my Nikon camera, I simply pushed the button at the right moments. 😀 (By the way, did you find the time to buy yourself a DSLR yet? You said that you wanted to some times ago.)
I love the National Geographic!! (But you’re way too kind saying that my photos would belong there. 😉 )
Wish everybody had a chance to watch baby pandas up close – they bring so much joy and happiness, no one could possibly be sad whilst watching them. They’re like an antidote to misery.
Wishing you a lovely weekend! ❤

  5. Thank you so much for sharing those beautiful pictures! The bee ones are amazing, but the pandas…. Such cute, fuzzy, furry fluff balls. They’re the winners for me. (But the sea lions are also very cute.) 🙂

  6. I had so much fun visiting the Pandas and the Vultures looked a treat. I am often asked why I am not ready to go out and I have to admit I was chasing bees or butterflies around the garden to get that great photo. I am glad you managed to get some Sarah. How many did you take to get those three? Sometimes I take lots which end up in the delete folder. I look forward to getting about this month as well 🙂
    PS love the shorts 🙂

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed our trip to the zoo, Brian! Chasing bees and butterflies is one of the best excuses there are! 😀
I did take surprisingly few pics of this particular bee, maybe around 20? It kept flying around me and not wanting to settle down to enjoy a hearty meal. 😀 But normally I would have made many more (lots of them out of focus too!), and most of them are being deleted afterwards (ah, the joy of digital cameras, right? 😉 )
P.S. Those were not my shorts! LOL! 😀

  7. It is so lovely to read of your happiness and excitement my friend! Your pictures are great. The bees are not easy to capture in flight and you did a great job. And those little Pandas are so cute!
    Such a fun post Sarah!

    1. Thank you, Darren! It was a fun and lovely day! Watching the pandas has a very therapeutic effect – you can’t feel sad and overwhelmed at how things are when you see them playing around and having the time of their life. 😀 We should all probably have a panda bear in the garden – lol! 😉

      1. No problem, Darren, the bears would see to that plantation, I’ve heard they eat tons of the stuff, so as soon as it’s grown it’s gone again. 😉

  8. Thank you so much for sharing your trip to the zoo. Like Tracy, I remember when the pandas were born and it is wonderful to see your photos of them. They are gorgeous.

I can confidently say that the bees won’t sue you — your photos of them are too pretty.

    1. Phew – thanks for reassuring me, Su, regarding the bees. 😉 So glad you enjoyed this little trip to the zoo. Next time I’ll try to remember making a little video of the pandas. 😀🐼💕

  9. It’s so healing to be around nature and animals. So good to see them cared for, but how did you get so close to that bee!? I’d be like Eeeekkkkk! 😛

    1. Hahaha! 😁 But the bumblebees are so cute, Lani, so hairy and chubby. 😀 Wasps however look quite different and a bit menacing, I wouldn’t dare come too close to them. 😂

      1. Well….. Pretty much locked down. Technically, a Shelter In Place order, but since we are a retirement community, we are under stricter orders than most. However I decided before the lockdown that once it started I would spend the time improving my photography skills, which I have been working on diligently. And I have a dog and no yard (an apartment), so I do get her out for a long walk in the middle of the day, and then a very short one before bed. My camera and my dog (and my blog) are keeping me sane. How are you doing? Germany handled the pandemic the right way and you guys are once again out and about, I understand.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. That’s so lovely that you have a dog, Hannah! May I ask her name? It’s always so much nicer to go for a walk in company and dogs are the perfect company! That’s really great that you use the time to improve your camera skills during the lockdown, although from what I’ve seen you don’t need much more improvement, your photos are magnificents!
Things are okay around here, many idiots who do everything they can to increase the number of infections but that seems to be the case pretty much everywhere around the globe. The thing is that most Germans haven’t faced the pandemic like other countries have and thus don’t get the seriousness of the situation. Still many people who believe it to be just some sort of the flu. 😦 I try to take every precautions possible but can only do so much. We’ll see how things will develope once autumn arrives, it’s forecast that things could get worse then.
        Take care!

  10. It has been so long since I’ve been to a zoo – since I’ve been anywhere! I love all the panda pics and it seems the Berlin Zoo has built them a wonderful enclosure. Baby animals are so much fun to watch – all that bursting enthusiasm for life. Your photos are always a special treat, and this was a fine way to end the Corvid Challenge. If only we could find a way to end the Covid Challenge…

    1. I couldn’t agree more, Shari! If only we could find a way to end this crisis. 😯 I’m not going out much these days either, the zoo is a rare exception. I could if I wanted to since Germany has opened up a lot these past weeks but it just doesn’t feel right.

      1. You have to do what’s best for you and I know you’re also thinking about your mom and her health. This is a very difficult problem to navigate safely. Still, I’m glad you had fun at the zoo.

  11. I am living vicariously through your post, Sarah. What a treat you’ve given us! I was so excited to scroll down and see the baby pandas. I remember when they were born. They are so cheeky. 🙂 And the vultures. The eyes. Just gorgeous. I’m not sure about that adult though. Is it even real? What an amazing looking bird. And thank you for finishing off with the white-necked raven. I feel so calm now. Good thing too, after the panda excitement, lol. 🙂

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed this post, Tracy, and I truly wish you could watch the pandas in person yourself- there’s nothing like it. Will see if I remember making a little video next time. 😉 So glad you also think the vultures are amazing, many people don’t but I have a soft spot for them. 😊 Hehe! Glad the raven calmed you down after all the excitement. 😉❤
