Welcome to a new blog challenge!

Film Fridays is a project initiated by Darren from over at The Arty Plantsman and me.

After doing a daily music challenge for a month last year we talked about doing something similar for movies.

And the current global lockdowns give us the perfect excuse to start!
Many of us are confined to home with only the TV for company so we thought we would start ‘Film Fridays’ so that we can talk about our favourite movies and hopefully give our readers some ideas for things to watch.
We would be delighted if you would join us!
Just tag your post with #FilmFriday and do a pingback to either Darren’s or my posts so that we can can have a look at yours! You can also copy the “Film Friday” poster I came up with.

We don’t necessarily want to talk about the nerdy technical details but more about why these films speak to us as individuals, why they have a place in our hearts, and any personal memories they evoke.

So please join us each friday when we will each be talking about a different movie from our list of favourites!

Today I’m starting with the „Indiana Jones“ movies starring Harrison Ford and directed by Steven Spielberg.
That I’m mentioning these films first might give you a clue as to how much I love, Love, LOVE them – though I have to admit that after that my list of favorites is rather a chaotic muddle! 😂

I still remember my awe when the opening scenes of „Raiders of the Lost Ark“ (1981), the first in a series of to date four, started.
The mystery, the adventure, the GOLD!

(Oh, and the hat of course – what wouldn’t I give for a fedora that fits me!! Sigh.)
Well, it hit me that I would have to become an archaeologist if I wanted these things to come true – and so I did!!
But before you start to get all excited about that, I have to tell you that it wasn’t all that glamorous and I actually never found any gold but merely fossilized fishes, plants and beetles. 😉 Oh, and part of a Propalaeotherium, an early genus of equid endemic to Europe and Asia during the Early Eocene (about 45 million years ago). (In an upcoming post I’ll talk more about this and show you pictures.)

For a short while I even got the nickname Indy, because I couldn’t talk about anything else! And if we had had mobile phones back then, I’m sure I would have picked the Movie Theme by John Williams for my ringtone. 😉

Even though I could probably give you a scene by scene account of any of the movies (be glad you’re stuck at home and not sitting with me in front of a TV – just imagine me excitedly jumping up and down while dramatically explaining what’s going to happen in the next scene right before it plays), I’ll stick to just one of the scenes that made a lasting impression on me.

So how about you?

Was there a movie that made such an impression on you that you choose a career because of it?
And have you ever seen any of the Indiana Jones movies? Did you like them? Why? Let me know in your comments!

  1. The first Indiana Jones movie will always be my favorite. The second I thought was gross. The fourth had some merit, but was still kind of dumb. The third is a close second. Gosh, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen them all. Now I have a craving! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much for visiting and commenting! I admit I love them all, though the fourth one not as much as the others, but I remember how happy I was that the saga continues, so… 😀
It’s been a long time for me too, really need to rewatch them!
      Wishing you a lovely weekend!

  2. We loved the Indiana Jones films also, especially the first one. Even though I knew it was totally improbable, it was still exciting to be transported into the movie’s wild plot. Harrison Ford did his best rogue in these films.

All is well here, thank you. And I hope the same is true for you? Take care and stay safe! Much love! xxx

  3. Wait how did I miss this post!!?? What a good idea for a challenge. I saw one of the Indiana Jones movies when I was too young, I don’t remember it very well but my mom told me I had nightmares. Later I think I mightve seen the rest on TV, but not sure. I do LOVE hearing how this movie impacted you. You were/are an archeologist??? Whatttt that’s amazing. I would love to hear more about that journey, and how you arrived at art! Glad I caught this tonight (Thu) night~ I’ll have a think before tomorrow!♡

    1. There are some nightmare worthy scenes in the films I admit, especially when you were young watching them (most memorable one for me are the melting heads of Nazi bastards in the first one – eek!).
Hehe! Yes, at least I have studied classical archaeology (and art history) at university and got a degree to proof it but never got a paid job afterwards in the field, competition is tough and there are only so many jobs. But it was a wonderful time and I wouldn’t want to miss it. 😀 My art journey started after that. 😉 Looking forward to your Film Friday tomorrow!! ❤

  4. This post made me laugh. So funny, Sarah. That was a great movie, a classic. I didn’t have a career-making movie, but if I did, that would be a good one. Thanks for the light-hearted share, my friend. Take care and stay safe. 🙂

    1. Hi Diana! Sorry for the late reply, your comment landed in my spam folder. Thanks so much for your lovely comment! And I’m so happy I could make you laugh – so much more important these days…
Take care and stay safe too! ❤

      1. No problem at all, Sarah. I find comments in my spam all the time too. And we have much bigger things to worry about! Yes, you made me laugh and I appreciate that. ❤ It seems that Germany is getting a handle on the virus better than many of us. I'm glad (and jealous of your leadership). Be well, my friend. ❤

      2. I admit that I avoid watching the news so am not up to date on how well (or not) each country faces the situation but think Germany’s lucky with sensible leadership. Stay well and safe, my friend! ❤

  5. Indiana Jones movies are among my very favorites too!!! Love all four of them. I was a teenager when I saw the first film and I was immediately seduced by the story, the directing of Spielberg, the effects, and, of course, by the acting: Ford and Connery are among my favorite actors. And Steven Spielberg is simply a genius of cinematography! Just like George Lucas BTW. It is therefore not surprising that I am also a Star Wars fan in which Ford plays Han Solo. I am looking forward to the release of the fifth Indiana Jones, apparently in July 2021.

It’s fun to imagine him putting on Indy’s trademark again, given his advanced age; he is now around 70 years old and there is a limit to what he could realistically do in action sequences. But I hope that this project will be carried out with him and Spielbert.

BTW your poster is fantastic Sarah! Looking forward to reading your next Film Friday post and the one about the Propalaeotherium. xoxo

    1. Hi Dominique! So sorry for the late reply, your wonderful comment landed in my spam folder!
So happy that you love these films too and couldn’t agree more about Spielberg and Lucas being geniuses!
Ford and Connery are among my favorite actors too – guess who I favor in Star Wars? 😉 – and I’m so excited about the fifth Indiana Jones!! It will be total fun to see how they do it, especially the action scenes and I expect to laugh a lot. 😀 Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could watch it together in the cinema?! Wishing you a fabulous weekend, dear friend! Hugs! xoxo

  6. Confession: I was also an archaeologist. Although, it was short-lived. I majored in anthro in college with a concentration with archaeology. Did field work in college for credits, and my first gig after graduating was on the Ute Mt. Res in Colorado excavating kivas (underground dwellings) and such. One of the best summers of my life, afterwards, did lab work, but I decided to take a break, and never ended up returning!

But it wasn’t Indiana Jones that got me into it! I took a class and was hooked! xo

    1. Awesome confession!! 😀 I bet you have many wonderful memories of that time, I know that I do. 😉
I had Latin and Ancient Greek at school, both of which were prerequisite to study Classical Archaeology, so that was a plus. Sadly it’s a very narrow field here, at least in Germany, and jobs a rare…

  7. I read this an hour or more ago and had to head off on a research trip of the internet. Of course I loved all of those movies with their mystery and intrigue and when I saw the list milfordstreet posted I remembered more movies I loved. I think West Side Story was the first movie I ever saw in a theater and then South Pacific. Because my first husband and son were in the tech part of movie making, I saw a lot of movies. There are so many I loved but an all time favorite is one I no longer have and can’t get on DVD. Max Dugan Returns was fanciful and heart tugging. I watched it a dozen times at least and made everyone I knew watch it with me. It’s a 1983 movie that resonated at the time. Mona Lisa Smile was another favorite. August Rush and I could go on and on. Just like my last favorite that a wonderful friend bought me a Blue Ray of “Last Christmas” was a British Film that I have already watched three times. I love sweet and sappy, no horror and for many years now, some documentaries are just too hard to take in. I don’t read books like others do and the same goes for my movie watching. Thanks for reminding me of all those greats I can dig out again. Guess what my daughter will have to watch with me tomorrow? I found it on Amazon Prime. ;))) Hugs
P.S. Got your card, one is on it way to you and probably by slow boat these days.

    1. Hi Marlene! So happy to hear my card arrived (and before time too!). 😀
And how lovely to read your comment to this post – I love West Side Story!!! And can’t tell how many times I’ve watched it. I haven’t seen Max Dugan Returns but just read a synopsis of it on Wikipedia and think that I’d very much like this film!! Kiefer Sutherland is a wonderful actor and the story sounds lovely. 🙂
I still haven’t watched Last Christmas yet, it wasn’t on DVD the last time I went to the library and now they’re closed (one of the things that bothers me a lot since libraries belong to my favorite places). But it’s on my list of must-sees. 😉
I’m not much of a horror movie fan myself, though I did watch a few in my teens with friends.
These days I especially love watching comedies – life’s too sad and serious anyway, a little escapism doesn’t hurt, don’t you think?
So glad this challenge reminded you of all the great films you love and hope that you and your daughter will have a chance to watch them together – the internet is good for that, right? Take care and stay safe! Hugs!!

      1. I’m sad that the libraries have closed too. I prefer comedy as well There are not many lately worth watching though. Good comedy is hard to come by. I went through my movies again last night. Have given so many away. Now I realize which movies really mean something to me. Hugs.

      2. You’re so right about this, Marlene, good comedy really is hard to come by these days. Some of my all-time favorites, like A Fish Called Wanda, date from the 80s and before that. Laurel and Hardy come to mind too. 😉

  8. My husband so so many of my friends just loved the Indiana Jones movies, but I never really got into them. Still, that’s what makes the world so interesting…what appeals to each of us is a little bit different. I have many favorite movies, but I don’t think any of them influenced my career decisions. They did, however, influence some of the way I look at the world and some of my values.

    1. I think it’s a good thing too that we all don’t like the same things and movies – would make for a very boring world. 😉
Hope that you’ll find some of my films to your liking though and share some thoughts and memories. 🙂

  9. I absolutely love the Indie films. I remember going with my mom and dad to the movies when I was quite young and this movie made quite an impression on me. I wanted to be an explorer. Unfortunately my career didn’t follow this path but my free time involves exploration into the wilderness.

    1. How wonderful that you love these films too, Lisa! I think only few people follow the profession of their dreams, and even if they do, they’re sometimes in for a disappointment. Exploring the wilderness is a wonderful thing to do and that I love as well, and it’s less likely that rival archaeologists are getting in your way. 😉 ❤

  10. I was thinking about you just this morning, Sarah! So glad to see your post. I love the movie poster. Very “Old Hollywood.” I’ve never seen “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” It just never appealed to me. I think the movies I’ve enjoyed most are the ones I’ve watched with my husband that resulted in a mutual cry-fest, “Out of Africa” being toward the top of the list.

    1. Thank you so much, Liz! I used to design our theater and musical production posters at school and haven’t done this in such a long time now, but it’s great fun! And I love “old Hollywood” – the movies back then were simply superb!
And Out of Africa is one of my very favorites too!!! The landscapes, the brilliant actors, the music – it’s a real masterpiece of cinematography! Looking forward to hear your thoughts on that one when it’s going to make an appearance on Film Fridays. 😉 Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe!

  11. I love your poster Sarah; just perfect.
I know I’ve said it before but I am really glad you and Darren are doing this.
The original Indiana Jones films belong to a period when I was very anti-Hollywood and watching only indie cinema, so I arrived at them much later — and on TV. I enjoyed them but I don’t think I appreciated their brilliance. Perhaps I need to watch them again.
But first, choosing a film for my post 🤔

    1. Thanks so much, Su! I used to design posters for our theater and musical productions at school and it was such fun doing it again after so long a time. 😀
Well, you could have made an exception for this “Indy” film (Indiana Jones’ nickname is “Indy” 😉 ) – lol! And a rewatch never hurts, just rewatched Dirty Dancing last weekend – and found it even better than before!
But I do get the anti-Hollywood thing, I had/have that too at times, especially when thinking of all those wonderful actresses that don’t get jobs anymore because they dared crossing 40! Just so stupid! But what do you expect from a still male-dominated film industry?! Looking so much forward to your film post!! xxx

      1. Hehe. Definitely some “indie” films I need to revisit.
And yes, the sexism and ageism (not to mention racism) of so much Hollywood cinema makes it almost unwatchable.
I think I’ve chosen the film I want to start the challenge with — I just need to watch it again.

  12. Sarah, sweet Sarah! I’ve been absent for a long time battling with a deep dark despair. But I’m back and blinking in the light of a new dawn and so thrilled to find you here with your wonderful ideas and words. It makes me happy. And now that I am ‘back’ I will be your regular and loyal visitor once more. Indiana Jones? What’s not to love! I’m not going to tire you with a favourite this time but thank you thank you thank you for still being here. I send you much love and the hope that you and yours are all safe and well xx

    1. OMG!!! Fiona!! How splendid to see/read you again!!! I didn’t dare hope you’d come back to blogging (though I have been checking in on you every so often, and will do so right away after replying to your super delightful comment!)!! I’m so very sorry that a dark despair had you tight in its grip – I was hoping the exact opposite might have been true and that you were so happy blogging simply would have distracted you – stupid me!
But I’m so glad to hear that you’re back and feeling better again, and I look so much forward to read you again! Sending much love back and hope that you and yours are all safe and well too!! xxx

  13. Well, you will struggle to top this one my friend! You started with my all time favourite movie (Raiders). I saw it on release as a teenager. It was my first solo trip to the cinema and I emerged SO excited by this movie. It has a magical ability thrill and transport the viewer into its world. The only thing that came close to this in recent years for me was ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.
I knew I was in for something special the moment the Paramount logo morphed into that jungle mountain. That first scene is perfection and would be the one I chose too. Even the poster is iconic. And that theme!
Movies were having a real renaissance at that time, largely due to Spielberg and Lucas, so teaming them up for this was a great move. Thank you for taking me back there and sharing my love of this movie!

    1. What an awesome film to watch for a first solo trip to the cinema! (And now I’m wondering which was mine… I can’t remember! 😂 ) And even though I had to watch this one at home I felt the same excitement and thrill. 😀
Spielberg and Lucas will always be my heroes for what they did for cinemas and movies – geniuses! So happy we’re doing this together, Darren! ❤

  14. I always liked all of those teacher movies: Mr. Holland’s Opus, Dead Poets Society, To Sir With Love. I can’t say they inspired me to enter a career in teaching, but they certainly showed the ability of teachers to touch peoples’ lives.
