Film Friday – “I’m left with only one option, I’m gonna have to science the shit out of this.”

Film Fridays is a project initiated by Darren from over at The Arty Plantsman and me.

(By now you should know the drill so I’m not going to copy the intro text this time, and if you don’t know what this is all about just click here.)

Just as I hit the publish button on my latest post of The Changing Seasons last Sunday, I got notified by WordPress that two days before my blog has reached its 5th anniversary – great timing, eh?

Since I hadn’t planned to write a special post about it anyway, that was okay though. But in way of honouring the occassion I decided to make up for it with this week’s Film Friday and highlight two of the films that I love and that were both released in 2015.

The first one, The Martian, is a 2015 science fiction survival film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon. It’s based on the novel with the same name by Andy Weir from 2011 which I have yet to read.

It also stars Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, Mackenzie Davis, Donald Glover, and Benedict Wong.

The film depicts the lone struggles of Mark Watney, a botanist and astronaut, who is part of the Ares III team and mistakenly presumed dead after a violent storm on Mars. While his crew is on their way home, Watney is forced to use his ingenuity and wits to survive until he can be rescued, and brought home to Earth.

If you also dreamed of becoming an astronaut like I did when I was a kid

(until I learned that you had to handle dizziness and vertigo quite well – which I don’t as every visit to the fair and its merry-go-rounds and carousels proved. After which I decided to become at least an astro physicist – until I learned that you had to be quite good at maths – which I am not!)

you’re going to love this film! So here’s the trailer: enjoy!

Next one is quite different but in my mind no less brilliant:

Inside_Out_(2015_film)_poster

Inside Out is a 2015 American 3D computer-animated comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures.

The film is set in the mind of a young girl named Riley (Kaitlyn Dias), where five personified emotions—Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling)—try to lead her through life as she and her parents (Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan) adjust to their new surroundings after moving from Minnesota to San Francisco.

The director Pete Docter first began developing Inside Out in 2010, after noticing changes in his daughter’s personality as she grew older. The film’s producers consulted numerous psychologists including Dacher Keltner from the University of California, Berkeley, who helped revise the story by emphasizing the neuropsychological findings that human emotions affect interpersonal relationships and can be significantly moderated by them.

If you ever wonder why people behave the way they do, I really recommend watching this film – it’s an eye opener. 😉

And now I want to know of course if any of you have seen these films! Did you like them? No/Yes? Why? plan to watch them? Let me know all about it in your comments!

  1. I love both of these movies!
We love all things Disney so Inside Out is a shoo-in.

The Martian was just so compelling – I kept expecting terrible things to happen (and they did) and I really thought he wouldn’t survive the experience! Riveting to the end!

  2. How did I miss this? First your post — congratulations on your anniversary 🥂💐
… but the movies too. I guess Inside Out maybe because I would have thought of it as a family movie and can’t persuade the boy-child into seeing anything that isn’t really avant- garden 🧐
But a movie with Matt Damon … and Sean Bean.
Thanks for this Sarah; I will see if the library has these.

    1. Hehe! No worries, Su! 😉
      And thank you! 😀
Inside Out is definitely a family kind of movie but as is so often the case there’s so much more to it than mere entertainment. I often find this as well with children’s literature to be the case.
As to Matt Damon and Sean Bean – yep, you better see if you can find a copy: it’s brilliant! 😀

      1. I agree. The best children’s books and family movies have layers of meaning available to adults — and that makes so much sense when adults Re so involved in children’s story-times and movie-watching.

    1. Yay!! I knew there had to be people somewhere who enjoy both types of movies at the same time as I do! 😄 That’s one of my all-time favourite quotes!!

  3. I loved The Martian. The book was so so good. I read it quick and when the movie came out I was excited that Matt Damon was cast because he’s one of my Hollywood favs. I love a smart man! The movie surprisingly did a good enough job when book to movies usually fail. And what I mean by this is, it was different enough to be its own thing, if that makes sense. Nice one, Sarah!

    1. That makes perfect sense! I really need to read the book!! And yesss – smart men are so sexy! 😉 Matt Damon’s one of my favourite actors as well – remember Good Will Hunting?
Have a wonderful week ahead, Lani and stay safe!❤

  4. Congrats on the 5 year anniversary!!! That’s a big deal. I could not watch the Martian. I have claustrophobia that bad. I couldn’t watch the splash down either. Had my son tell me if they made it. Now the Pixar movie, I’m all over that. I think I watched it a while back but would watch it again. I’m getting to an age, like my mother before me, when I revert back to watching children’s movies because most are not so stress inducing. My viewing these days is very G rated.

    1. I’ve always loved watching and reading children’s movies and books, and don’t think I’ll ever stop loving it, Marlene! There’s so much to take away from these kind of stories, also still love reading Fairy Tales! Inside Out is one of my fav Pixar movies, so clever and funny and sometimes even a bit sad. It’s funny how I can relate with all the main characters/emotions, and I think, actually we all do, may we be adults or children.
If you’re claustrophobic you really should avoid any space movies! Or those with submarines!!

      1. I do avoid any movies with closed in spaces. I actually stop breathing if I watch them. I had an underwater dream once years ago and my lungs hurt for a week from holding my breath. Never want that to happen again. 😉

      2. That sounds like an awful dream and way to wake up from it! Better to stay safe and watch movies that don’t contain any nightmare triggers!

  5. Congratulations on your blog anniversary Sarah!
The Martian is a great favourite here. The book is actually even better! I read it a few days before we went to see the movie, taking along my reluctant wife who thought it was not her kind of thing at all. She then spent the next weekend reading the book!
I have not seen Inside Out though!…

    1. Thank you, Darren! 😀 How awesome that Susan was so hooked by the film she ended up reading the novel in just one weekend!! Last time I checked in the library the books was already taken – again! Probably should just get over it and buy the damn thing! LOL! 😀
Inside Out is really so funny, I think you’d enjoy it very much. 😀 ❤

      1. The book really is that good and well worth buying. I literally couod not put it down and I read it in a weekend too. It is SO funny. And makes you realise that no other actor but Matt Damon could have played Watney. Big shout out to the rest of the cast too – they are all fantastic. Even Sean Bean did not get killed off for once…

      2. Haha! Yes, he seems to have a knack for getting killed early in most of his films and series. 😂
Matt Damon is one of my favourite Hollywood actors ever since Good Will Hunting!

      2. Aside from the heat, reading the whole weekend sounds wonderful! After some rain, the weather cleared off, and my husband and I were able to go for a drive and take some photos.
