The Black Shirt – 30 Days 30 Songs

Day 8 of my new blog challenge –

Share Your Music! 30 Days 30 Songs!

A couple of years ago I started learning Spanish at the Instituto Cervantes (a really good language school by the way that I can only recommend!).

Our teacher pointed out that our language skills would greatly benefit from listening – and singing! – to Spanish music.

Which is just what we did!

One of my favourite Latin American singers is Juanes, a Colombian singer and songwriter who has won 20 Latin Grammy Awards and two Grammy Awards.

His song “La Camisa Negra” (The Black Shirt) was a huge hit in Germany. I liked it so much that I bought every single one of his albums – yeah, that was back in the days when people still bought CDs – LOL! πŸ˜€

My Spanish used to be quite good but it has become somewhat rusty over the last years, so I guess, it’s time to listen to some of his songs again. πŸ˜‰

      1. That’s true, Liz. I always think translations lack the original verve of the thing – which is why I’m eager to learn as many languages as possible!

    1. So glad you like it, Tracy! It is a very catchy tune, isn’t it? And I also still buy CDs or borrow them from the library. I’m kind of old-fashioned that way and I like it. πŸ˜‰

    1. It is a lot of fun – if the teacher is good! Otherwise it can be very tiresome. I use the little Spanish I have whenever I happen to go on holidays in Spain – it’s fun ordering your food or go shopping and talk to the attendants in Spanish. πŸ™‚

  1. What a fun song, no one can resist dancing. The video is fun to watch as it’s so imaginative, but just to close your eyes and hear the music is rewarding.
How many languages do you speak, Sarah? You have a gift for language I suspect. You have a gift for curiosity as well.

    1. It really is a fun song, Shari! And the video is a hoot! πŸ˜€
He also writes and sings some very beautiful ballads, very moving and sad. He’s also quite the activist as well, like Bono and U2 really, and I seem to have thing for those kind of artists. πŸ™‚
I’ve came across quite a few languages during school: English, Latin, Ancient Greek. I added Spanish and French at university, and would love to give it a shot at Italian. I can have easy conversations in Spanish and French but I’m only really fluent in German and English. πŸ™‚ It still amazes me though when I happen to come across a Latin text and understand what it is about more or less, and this almost twenty years after my last course at school! πŸ˜€
What I suck at though is maths! Never trust me when it comes to numbers – I’m completely hopeless there! πŸ˜€

      1. Wow, Sarah, I count you as somewhat fluent in as 3, no wait, 6, no wait, I counted incorrectly, maybe a dozen or so languages that you’re conversant? Sorry, I have trouble with math.
